Abant Lake Travel Guide: Route, Seasons and Planning

    8 September 2026· 11 min read·Nesilce Editor

Abant is Bolu's most-visited nature area. The trail that loops around the lake offers a completely different trip depending on the season.

    In brief

Abant Lake is a national park area about 33 km from Bolu city centre, at roughly 1,350 metres above sea level. A walking trail of about 7 kilometres loops around the lake. Autumn and winter are when the crowds thin out and the scenery is at its most striking.

Where is Abant Lake, and why is it so well known?

Abant Lake is Bolu's best-known nature area and one of the most searched-for lake destinations in Türkiye. It lies about 33 km from Bolu city centre, at roughly 1,350 metres above sea level. It is a dammed lake, formed when a landslide blocked the valley.

According to a Bolu Olay news report dated 22 August 2026, Abant welcomed more than 1,490,000 visitors in 2024; in the same year Gölcük recorded about 524,000 and Yedigöller 289,000 visitors. Abant is by far the hub of visitor traffic in the region.

What to do around the lake

    The 7-kilometre trail

What defines Abant is the walking trail that loops all the way round the lake. This route of about 7 kilometres is laid out for walking and cycling.

The trail is largely flat, which makes it a far more accessible route than mountain paths.

    Getting around the lake

Electric vehicle and bike tours are available in the area. As of 2026, the horse-drawn carriages (fayton) have been replaced by eco-friendly electric vehicles and bike tours. Because these arrangements can change from season to season, it's wise to check before you visit.

In autumn, Abant and Yedigöller National Park (the "Seven Lakes") peak at the same time. That may look like an advantage for visitors to the region, but it means heavy traffic and full car parks at weekends. Weekdays are noticeably more relaxed at both places.

Abant and Yedigöller on the same trip

The two areas are often mentioned together, but they are not in the same direction. Abant lies south-west of Bolu city centre, while Yedigöller is to the north, close to the Mengen route.

Rather than squeezing both into one day, we recommend this plan:

    1. Day 1: Arrive and settle in, rest in the evening
    2. Morning of day 2: Yedigöller — set off early for the morning light and smaller crowds
    3. Morning of day 3: Abant — walk around the lake, then head home

Nesilce Tatil Köyü is on the Mengen side of Bolu; it is about 48 km from Yedigöller and about 1 hour 10 minutes from Abant Lake National Park. If you're planning a Yedigöller-focused trip, this location shortens your morning drive.

    Practical notes before you visit

    • Go early. At weekends, the car park and trail get busy after 10:00.
    • Dress in layers. At 1,350 metres, mornings are a few degrees colder than in the city.
    • Comfortable shoes. The 7 km may be flat, but it's long.
    • Water and snacks. You can't buy them at every point along the trail.
    • Take your rubbish home. In a national park this isn't a courtesy, it's the rule.
    • Check current arrangements. Entry fees and on-site rules change every year.

    Where to stay

The Abant area is mainly hotels, while the Mengen route is mainly bungalows and nature hotels. Which one suits you depends on the focus of your trip:

Nesilce Tatil Köyü offers bungalows and standard hotel rooms; a Turkish village breakfast of local produce is included with every stay and parking is free. There is no pool, jacuzzi or thermal facility on site.

    How to get to Abant

Most people reach Abant Lake National Park by private car. It's a drive of about 33 kilometres from Bolu city centre; the road climbs into the mountains and is full of bends.

    Starting pointApproximate distanceNote

    Ankara~2.5 hours + the Bolu–Abant driveVia Gerede
The Mengen route~1 hour 10 minutesCombined with a Yedigöller trip

In the winter months this road can see snow and ice; you'll need winter tyres and careful driving.

    A day around the lake

A day at Abant usually revolves around one thing: walking around the lake.

    1. Arrive early in the morning. At weekends, the car park and trail get busy after 10:00.
    2. All or part of the trail. The full 7 km loop takes 2–3 hours on average.
    3. Rest stops. There are seating areas and viewpoints around the lake.
    4. Afternoon. A bike or electric vehicle tour as an alternative.
    5. Head home. Early in winter, later in summer.

Because the trail is largely flat, Abant is accessible to a far wider range of people than mountain paths.

    How Abant differs from Yedigöller

The two areas often crop up in the same sentence, but they offer different experiences.

In short, Abant is more accessible and landscaped, while Yedigöller is deeper in the forest and more dependent on the season.

What to expect, season by season

Spring (April–May). As the snow retreats the blossom begins; the trail can be muddy, but crowds are small.

Summer (June–August). Thanks to the 1,350-metre altitude, it is noticeably cooler than the heat of the city. Weekends are the busiest time.

Autumn (September–November). Colour and mist. It peaks at the same time as Yedigöller; weekdays are much more relaxed.

Winter (December–March). The snow cover lasts a long time. Crowds are at their lowest; road conditions need checking.

    Practical checklist before your visit

    • Comfortable walking shoes — the 7 km may be flat, but it's long
    • Layered clothing — mornings are cool at 1,350 metres
    • Water and snacks
    • Sunscreen — the sun is stronger at altitude
    • A spare battery for your camera gear
    • A rubbish bag — in a national park you take your waste home
    • Check the current entry arrangements and fees

    Where should you base yourself?

Abant on its own is a one-day trip; if you want to explore the region as a whole, choosing where to stay is crucial.

    • If you're only seeing Abant: around Abant or Bolu city centre
    • If your trip focuses on Yedigöller: the Mengen route
    • If you're seeing both: a centrally placed base that lets you plan two separate mornings

Nesilce Tatil Köyü is on the Mengen side; it is about 48 km from Yedigöller and about 1 hour 10 minutes from Abant Lake National Park. We offer bungalows and standard hotel rooms.
