Places to Visit in Bolu in Winter: A Seasonal Guide
Bolu does not close in winter; only its routes change. Which spot should you visit in which month, and which becomes unreachable under snow?
In winter, Abant, Gölcük, Kartalkaya and the district towns of Bolu remain accessible, while access to Yedigöller shifts to the Mengen route because the road on the Bolu side may close. When planning a winter trip, flexibility over your route matters more than flexibility over your dates.
Bolu does not close in winter; its routes change
Bolu brings summer and autumn to mind. Yet winter is the least crowded and most visually striking season in the region. The question is not "can you go?" but which spot to visit in which month. This article brings Bolu's best-known spots together in a single table, according to how accessible they are in winter.
According to a Bolu Olay news report dated 22 August 2026, Abant, Gölcük and Yedigöller welcomed a total of 2,303,762 visitors in 2024: more than 1,490,000 at Abant, around 524,000 at Gölcük and 289,000 at Yedigöller. These three spots behave very differently in winter.
Winter accessibility table
| Spot | Winter status | Best period | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gölcük Nature Park | Usually accessible | December – March | Close to the city centre, a short visit |
| Lake Abant | Visited all winter | January – February | Strong snowy scenery |
| Kartalkaya | The heart of the winter season | January – March | Ski-focused |
| Yedigöller | Road may close | Early December / March | Checking ahead is essential |
| Mudurnu | Accessible | All winter | Historic town, indoor options |
| Göynük | Accessible | All winter | Historic houses, a short tour |
| Around Mengen | Accessible | All winter | On the Yedigöller winter route |
What does each month offer?
December
The snow cover is just settling. On the Yedigöller side, the road may not have closed completely yet; the first week of December offers the chance to see the last traces of autumn and the first day of snow at the same time. A risky but rewarding period.
January – February
The thickest snow, the most powerful scenery and the fewest crowds. On the other hand, these are also the months with the highest risk of mountain roads closing. Kartalkaya is the heart of the season at this time. If you are planning a trip to the Yedigöller side, have an alternative ready.
March
A transition month. There is still snow, but the roads begin to open. It is an interesting period for photography: snow and early spring can appear in the same frame.
A 2-day winter route in Bolu
Day 1 — the centre and surroundings
- Arrive before midday and settle in
- In the afternoon, a short snow walk at Gölcük or around Mengen
- A hot local meal in the evening
Day 2 — one big destination
- Set off early in the morning
- If the weather and the road allow, Yedigöller; if not, head towards Abant or Kartalkaya
- Head back around 15:30-16:00 — darkness falls early in winter
The golden rule in winter: one big destination a day. Squeezing two long routes into the same day becomes exhausting when combined with short days and road conditions.

Where to stay in winter
Choosing accommodation in winter follows a different logic from the summer months. The deciding factor is not the view but access:
| Criterion | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Close to a main road | Roads with priority for snow clearing |
| Location relative to your destination | Not being stuck behind a road that may close |
| Heating and hot water | The foundation of winter comfort |
| Breakfast included | Critical for an early start |
| Parking | Important for your car under snow |
Nesilce Tatil Köyü is in Hacıahmetler, Mengen (Bolu), on the winter route to Yedigöller; it is roughly 48 km from the park. A local Turkish village breakfast is included with every stay, and parking is free. The property does not have a pool, a jacuzzi or thermal facilities.

Three advantages of visiting Bolu in winter
- No crowds. Spots where queues form in autumn are almost empty in winter.
- Contrast in the scenery. Snow cover simplifies the texture of the forest; it is a strong period for photography.
- Flexibility. Accommodation is much easier to find than on autumn weekends.
On the other hand, there are two clear disadvantages: the days are short and road conditions are changeable.
Daily time plan in winter
The most common mistake in winter is planning at an autumn pace. In December and January, daylight is noticeably shorter.
| Time | Conditions | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 08:00 | Day is just breaking | Breakfast, check road conditions |
| 09:00 | Set off | After the snow has been cleared |
| 10:00-14:30 | Main programme window | One big destination |
| 15:00 | The light starts to fade | Get on the road home |
| 16:30 | Dark | Do not be on the road |
This window is about 4.5 hours. Your programme should be built around this reality.
Winter details, spot by spot
Gölcük Nature Park
Being the closest area to Bolu city centre makes it the most reliable option in a winter plan. It is suitable for short walks and a stroll around the lake. The snow-covered pine forest is visually striking.
Lake Abant
Because it sits at an altitude of around 1,350 metres, the snow cover lasts a long time. In winter, the roughly 7-kilometre trail around the lake is walked in part rather than in full. Its winter scenery is one of the best-known images of the region.
Kartalkaya
The heart of the ski season. For non-skiers too, it offers snowy views and a high-altitude atmosphere. For details, see our article on where to stay for a Kartalkaya ski holiday.
Yedigöller
The riskiest but most rewarding destination in winter. The route on the Bolu side may close, in which case the Mengen route is used. Your programme must be flexible.
Mudurnu and Göynük
Two spots that save the day when the weather turns bad in winter. Historic houses, narrow streets and indoor options come in handy on rainy or very cold days.
Mengen
On the winter route to Yedigöller. It offers local cuisine, short routes through the forest and a quiet base to stay.
A winter programme for families with children
Coming with children in winter is perfectly possible; the rule is simple: short slots, frequent warm-ups.
- 1–1.5-hour slots for playing in the snow
- Followed by a return somewhere warm
- Change wet clothes straight away
- Spare socks and gloves — at least two sets
- A flask for hot drinks
Rather than long snow walks, short, repeated activities around the property make children far happier.

Frequently asked questions
Which nature spot in Bolu is easiest to reach in winter?
Gölcük Nature Park is one of the easiest spots to reach in winter thanks to its proximity to Bolu city centre. Abant is also visited throughout the winter; for both, you should check road conditions on the day.
Can I visit Yedigöller in winter?
You can, but it is not guaranteed. The route on the Bolu side may close because of snow and ice; during this period, the Yeniçağa–Mengen–Yazıcık road is used. Checking before you set off is essential.
Which month is best for snowy scenery?
January and February are the months when the snow cover is thickest. Early December and March are transition periods when there is a better chance of both snow and the roads being in good condition.
Does a day trip make sense in winter?
It is risky. Days are short in winter and road conditions can change during the day. Staying a night in the area makes both your programme and your journey home safer and more relaxed.
Is it suitable to come with children in winter?
Yes, but keep the programme short. The best format is 1–2-hour slots of playing in the snow, followed by a return somewhere warm; spare clothes and socks are essential.
