    17 October 2026· 10 min read·Nesilce Editor

Just 13 km from Bolu centre, Gölcük is a small lake that looks different in every season. 2026 entry fees, the lakeside walk, photo spots and a day route from Mengen, all in one guide.

    In brief

Gölcük Nature Park lies about 13 km south of Bolu centre, at roughly 1,217 m, around a small reservoir lake; the walk around the lake is about 1.3 km. Under DKMP's 2026 tariff, entry is 75 TL per person or 225 TL per car, and children under 7 and over-65s on foot enter free. Before you go, check the reservation and opening-hours arrangements with the Bolu Branch Directorate of National Parks (0374 215 52 81).

Where is Gölcük Nature Park and why is it so popular?

Gölcük Nature Park (Gölcük Tabiat Parkı) lies about 13 km south of Bolu city centre, at roughly 1,217 metres above sea level, around a small reservoir lake. The walk around the lake is about 1.3 km and takes less than half an hour at an easy pace. In 2026, entry under the tariff of Türkiye's General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP) is 75 TL per person or 225 TL per car.

Its short distance from town, easy walking and constantly changing scenery make Gölcük the most practical nature stop in Bolu. According to an NTV report from May 2024, the park receives around 500,000 visitors a year. The same report says DKMP ended the park's allocation to Bolu Municipality, with operating rights returning to the General Directorate.

Location, altitude and lake details come from the Gölcük page on Kültür Portalı, the culture portal of Türkiye's Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Navigation tip: the name "Gölcük" appears in several places in Türkiye. The Gölcük district of Kocaeli and Gölcük Nature Park in Isparta are entirely different places, and the DKMP list also includes a separate Kargalı Gölcük Nature Park in Bolu. Typing "Bolu Gölcük Tabiat Parkı" into your map app is the safest option.

How do you get to Gölcük?

    From Bolu city centre

The park is a short drive of about 13 km from Bolu centre; with normal traffic it usually takes less than half an hour. Kültür Portalı also mentions city public transport and minibuses as alternatives to driving. Timetables can change, so check the current service locally in Bolu.

One important detail: in Kültür Portalı's words, vehicles are not allowed around the lake. You leave the car before the lakeside and continue on foot.

    From Mengen and Nesilce

From Nesilce Tatil Köyü it is about 55 km (around 50 minutes) to Bolu centre, then a further 13 km to Gölcük. That makes roughly 70 km and about 1 hour 10 minutes in total. Journey times vary with the route, traffic and weather.

How much is the Gölcük entry fee in 2026?

Under DKMP's 2026 Protected Areas Fee Tariff, "Bolu Gölcük Tabiat Parkı" is listed as a Category I site in the Karadeniz-1 (Bolu) region. The 2026 fees for this category are:

A few points from the tariff's implementing rules are worth knowing:

    • Disabled visitors, veterans and families of fallen soldiers, among other privileged groups, enter free on showing their documents.
    • At sites run by a private operator, the tariff figures are maximum prices.

    Opening hours and reservations

We could not find officially published, up-to-date visiting hours for Gölcük. The most reliable way to check the hours and the arrangements on the day is to call the Bolu Branch Directorate of National Parks (Milli Parklar Bolu Şube Müdürlüğü) on 0374 215 52 81.

Reservations also need checking. In December 2025, DKMP 9th Regional Director Gültekin Aksan announced that entry by appointment would apply from 2026 at Gölcük, Yedigöller and Abant, with visitors applying a few days in advance (İHA via Kocaeli Gündem). We were unable to confirm from an official source on which dates and in what way the system operates, so call the same number a few days before you go.

How long is the Gölcük walking trail?

Gölcük's main walk is the lakeshore path that runs all the way round the lake. With a perimeter of about 1,300 metres, one loop is roughly 1.3 km. Compared with Abant's loop of about 7 km, it is far shorter and much easier for families with children.

    PlanEstimated time
    One loop, normal pace20–25 minutes
One loop with photo and jetty stops45–60 minutes
    Two loops + a picnic break2–3 hours
One loop in snow40 minutes or more

These times are estimates based on an average walking speed. A September 2025 report by Anadolu Agency (AA) describes visitors spending time on the shore, the jetties and the footpath, and young people cycling round the lake on rented bikes.

After rain the shore path can be muddy, and in winter icy. Shoes with a non-slip sole are enough; no special hiking gear is needed.

When is the best time to visit Gölcük?

Gölcük is visited all year round, but each season has a different character. For temperatures we used the long-term averages for Bolu from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM). These are city-centre figures; Gölcük sits higher, so it is usually cooler.

SeasonHighlights at GölcükBolu centre average (MGM)
    SpringQuiet, fresh greeneryApril 9.7 °C, May 14.1 °C
SummerWater lilies, cool air, fire-season rulesJuly 19.9 °C
AutumnGreen and yellow tones, mistOctober 11.8 °C, November 7.0 °C
WinterSnow, frozen lake, sledgingJanuary 0.6 °C (average low −3.5 °C)

    Autumn colours

At Gölcük the colours can start to appear as early as late September. On 28 September 2025, AA reported green, brown and yellow tones together in the forest around the lake. Footage from DHA dated 24 October 2021 and from İHA dated 17 November 2024 shows the colours still going in late October and mid-November.

What sets Gölcük apart from Yedigöller is the forest itself: conifers such as pine and fir are mixed in with beech and hornbeam, so the scene never turns completely red but becomes a blend of deep green and yellow. If you also want to see Yedigöller on the same trip, our Yedigöller autumn foliage calendar sets out a week-by-week plan.

    Winter and snow

Gölcük is one of the easiest nature areas in Bolu to reach in winter. According to AA reports, about 30 cm of snow was measured in the park in December 2018 and about 50 cm in January 2024. In December 2018 the lake froze when night temperatures dropped to around −7 °C, and on snowy days families go sledging on the slopes.

The figures show its winter role too: according to DKMP data reported by TRT Haber, Gölcük welcomed 28,700 visitors during the 2024 mid-winter school break, while Yedigöller received just 1,530. For a winter itinerary, see things to do in Bolu in winter.

Warning: when the lake froze, park officials warned visitors not to walk out onto the ice. However solid it looks, take your photos from the shore.

Where are the best photo spots at Gölcük?

    1. The state guesthouse on the shore. According to Kültür Portalı, this building belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry stands right on the lakeside, and it is one of the most familiar elements in photos of Gölcük. Its reflection is sharpest on windless mornings.
    2. The jetties. Shots of the jetties taken from a low angle make the small lake look wider.
    3. The approach road. In autumn the trees along the road up to the park turn yellow; find a safe lay-by and stop for a few minutes.
    4. Water lilies in summer. Towards the end of June, yellow, white and pink water lilies open on the lake surface. Shoot from the shore, ideally with a telephoto lens.
    5. The snowy shore in winter. The frozen surface and snow-laden pine branches make the strongest winter shots.

Timing: early morning is best for both reflections and an empty shore. In the afternoon, low sunlight shining through the yellow leaves from behind brings the colours to life.

Commercial photography and filming are subject to a separate DKMP filming tariff. If you are planning a professional shoot or want to fly a drone, ask for permission in advance.

    What facilities does Gölcük have?

    Picnic tablesAvailable in designated areas
Restaurant, café, kioskThe rural restaurant, rural café and kiosk were tendered to new operators for 5+5 years in December 2025
BicyclesLake tours by rented bike are possible (AA, September 2025)

What should you watch out for at Gölcük?

    • No driving around the lake. The lakeside is reserved for pedestrians.
    • Do not pick the water lilies. According to June 2026 reports, the administrative fine for picking the protected water lilies at Abant and Gölcük is over 699,000 TL. The lakes are patrolled.
    • Fire and barbecue rules are seasonal. The Ministry treats 1 June–31 October as the high fire-risk period. In 2026 the Bolu Governorship banned entry to forested areas from 15 July to 30 September. In the forest and nature parks announced by the governorship, barbecues and gas picnic stoves could be used between 10:00 and 20:00, provided no fire was lit on the ground. The rules are announced afresh each year, so check before you go.
    • Never tip barbecue ash into the lake. According to a study by researchers at Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University (DHA, February 2026), the highest soil pollution was measured at the barbecue and picnic area on the lake's eastern shore. The report also notes that some visitors dunk their barbecues in the lake to put them out.
    • Stay off the frozen lake and take your rubbish home. Gölcük is a small lake, and its ecosystem is far more fragile than that of a large one.

How can you avoid the crowds?

Being so close to Bolu centre makes Gölcük a weekend favourite for people from the city. An AA report from February 2024 describes the parking areas filling up and a queue of cars forming at the entrance on a sunny weekend.

    • Go on a weekday. This is where you will notice the biggest difference.
    • At weekends, arrive before 10:00. Picnic areas and the car park fill up towards midday.
    • Watch out for holidays. Crowds grow during the mid-winter school break, the Eid (Bayram) holidays and public holidays such as Republic Day on 29 October.
    • Walk in the morning, save the café stop for midday.
    • Remember that everyone wants to make the most of the first sunny day after a spell of bad weather.

How do you plan a day trip from Mengen that includes Gölcük?

Route 1: Gölcük + Abant (full day)

    1. 08:00 — Turkish village breakfast at Nesilce
    2. 08:45 — Set off for Gölcük via Bolu centre (~70 km)
    3. 10:00–11:30 — Lake loop, photos of the guesthouse and jetties
    4. 11:30–12:15 — Café stop or a picnic table
    5. 12:15–13:15 — Drive on to Abant via Bolu centre (~47 km)
    6. 13:15–15:30 — Part of the Abant lakeside walk
    7. 15:30 — Head back; Abant to Nesilce takes about 1 hour 10 minutes

Total driving on this route is about 3.5 hours. For the Abant side, our Abant Lake travel guide covers the trail and seasonal notes in detail.

Route 2: Gölcük on your arrival day (half day)

If you are coming from the Istanbul direction, head up to Gölcük first when you reach Bolu. After an hour and a half around the lake, have lunch in Bolu and continue to Mengen. As check-in at our resort starts at 14:00, this plan gives you a taste of nature without wasting the middle of the day.

    Route 3: Gölcük in winter

According to Kültür Portalı, the Bolu–Yedigöller road is usually closed by snow in winter, and Yedigöller is reached via the Yeniçağa–Mengen–Yazıcık route instead. In this season Gölcük is one of the easiest snow stops to reach on the Bolu side. A snowy lake walk at Gölcük in the morning, a drive back to Mengen in the afternoon and a relaxing evening in your bungalow make a fine winter day. Use winter tyres and check road conditions before you set off.

    Gölcük, Abant or Yedigöller?

The three are often mentioned in the same breath, but they suit different needs. The table draws on Kültür Portalı's Abant and Yedigöller pages, the DKMP 2026 tariff and DKMP's school-break visitor data.
