New Year's Eve 2026 in Bolu: A Snowy Bungalow Break

    17 October 2026· 11 min read·Nesilce Editor

New Year falls on a Friday this year, which makes for an ideal calendar for a snowy three-night escape in Bolu. When should you book, what are the roads like, and are Yedigöller and Kartalkaya open?

    In brief

For New Year 2026, the most comfortable plan in Mengen, Bolu is a three-night bungalow stay from 31 December to 3 January that makes the most of the public holiday on Friday 1 January 2027; the best time to book is October–November. Snow and ice are normal on Bolu Mountain and the Mengen road: winter tyres and chains are essential, the Bolu-side road to Yedigöller may be closed, and access is then via Mengen.

What is the best way to plan a New Year bungalow break in Bolu?

For New Year's Eve 2026 in Bolu, the most comfortable plan is a three-night stay: check in on the afternoon of Thursday 31 December and check out at noon on Sunday 3 January. Because 1 January 2027 is a Friday and a public holiday in Türkiye, Friday to Sunday is already a three-day weekend, and anyone who takes 31 December off gets four days. Book in October or November, get winter tyres and snow chains ready, and treat Yedigöller as an "if the road is open" plan: those are the three ground rules for this trip.

Mengen in Bolu province is about 3 hours (260 km) from Istanbul and about 2.5 hours (230 km) from Ankara. If you are wondering where to go for New Year near Istanbul, it combines snowy forest, a quiet bungalow and a stay with breakfast included. This guide brings together when to book, snow and road conditions, winter options for Yedigöller, Kartalkaya, Abant and Gölcük, a sample itinerary and how to book.

    The 2026–2027 New Year calendar

    1 January 2027FridayPublic holiday (New Year's Day)
    2 January 2027SaturdayWeekend
3 January 2027SundayWeekend, day to travel home

Under Law No. 2429 on National Holidays and Public Holidays, 1 January is a public holiday in Türkiye; the law makes no provision for a half-day holiday on 31 December. With 1 January falling on a Friday this year, Friday to Sunday becomes a three-day break on its own. In practice, that means New Year demand will be spread over two or three nights rather than a single night.

When should you book for New Year?

Short answer: October and November. New Year is the most sought-after date of the winter season, and this year it coincides with a long weekend. Nesilce Tatil Köyü has 25 units in total: 10 standard bungalows (2–3 guests), 8 duplex bungalows (4–6 guests) and 7 standard hotel rooms (2 guests). The duplex bungalows, the most popular choice for larger families and groups of friends, are limited in number, so if that is the room type you want, act early.

    WhenWhat to do
October – mid-NovemberSettle your dates, number of nights and room type, then book
Late November – early DecemberIf options are narrowing, be flexible on arrival date (e.g. 30 December) or room type
1 week before New YearSort out winter tyres, chains and a car check; keep an eye on the forecast
1 day before you set offConfirm road conditions and your check-in time

Cancellation and change terms can differ depending on how you book. On online platforms, the cancellation policy varies by listing and by the rate you choose; reading that section before you pay makes life much easier if snow forces you to change your plans.

What is the weather like in Bolu at New Year, and is snow guaranteed?

According to the Turkish State Meteorological Service's long-term statistics for Bolu (1929–2025), the months either side of New Year look like this:

    Measure (Bolu city)DecemberJanuary
    Average temperature2.8 °C0.6 °C
    Average maximum temperature7.6 °C5.4 °C
    Average minimum temperature-1.1 °C-3.5 °C
Average number of days with precipitation14.715.5
Average monthly total precipitation59.0 mm57.8 mm
    Average daily sunshine2.0 hours2.0 hours

The practical takeaway: nights are usually below freezing, days a little above zero, and roughly half the month brings rain or snow. A snowy New Year is common in the region but not guaranteed. On the same day you may get rain or sleet lower down and snow higher up and on the mountain roads. Last year, in the final days of December, several days of heavy snow in Bolu were followed by sub-zero temperatures and icy roads.

Daylight shapes the programme too. In Bolu during New Year week the sun rises at about 08:15 and sets around 17:35. It gets dark earlier than that in the forest and in the valleys, so plan to head back from day trips by 15:30–16:00 to avoid driving icy mountain roads in the dark.

What are the roads like: D-100 over Bolu Mountain, the TEM and the Mengen road

Coming from Istanbul, take the TEM (Anatolian Motorway) through the Bolu Mountain Tunnel, carry on past Bolu and turn off at the Yeniçağa–Zonguldak junction towards Mengen; in normal conditions the drive takes about 3 hours. From Ankara, you reach Mengen via Gerede (about 2.5 hours). In snowy weather these times get noticeably longer.

    SectionWhat to expect in winterAdvice
TEM – Bolu Mountain TunnelMotorway with a tunnel crossing; when there are problems on the D-100, traffic is diverted hereFirst choice on snowy days
D-100 – Bolu Mountain passRestrictions on heavy vehicles and crash-related closures can occur in heavy snowSwitch to the TEM if it is snowing

Bolu – Yedigöller (Bolu side)Closed to traffic when there is a risk of snow and iceDo not base winter plans on this road
Mengen – Yazıcık – YedigöllerUsed as the winter routeConfirm first, and travel around midday

A recent example of how the D-100 behaves in snow: according to an NTV report of 21 February 2025, while heavy snow was falling on both the TEM and the D-100 over Bolu Mountain, a collision between two lorries closed the D-100 in both directions and drivers were diverted to the TEM. When the road reopened, only small vehicles were allowed through.

Are winter tyres and snow chains essential?

A communiqué published in the Official Gazette on 4 October 2025 extended the winter tyre requirement for vehicles used to carry passengers and goods on intercity roads to a five-month period running from 15 November to 15 April each year. The rule targets commercial passenger and freight transport; for private car owners, winter tyres are a recommendation. Even so, at New Year winter tyres are essential in practice on Bolu Mountain and the Mengen road, and chains belong in the boot. Try fitting your chains at home first, not for the first time at the side of a snowy road.

    Checklist before you set off

    1. Highways: the Closed Roads Enquiry (Karayolları Trafiğe Kapalı Yol Sorgulama) on the e-Devlet government portal shows closed roads within the network of the General Directorate of Highways (KGM). The codes in the winter programme column are: D permanently open, I open when possible, PD outside the programme.
    2. National park road: for the current state of the Yedigöller road, call the Bolu Branch of the National Parks Directorate: 0374 215 52 81.
    3. Weather: check the Turkish State Meteorological Service's latest forecast and warnings again the evening before and on the morning you leave.
    4. Your accommodation: ask where you are staying about local snow and road conditions; an on-the-spot report is often the quickest information you can get.
    5. Navigation: apps may suggest the closed Bolu–Yedigöller road; in winter, choose the route via Mengen yourself.

Can you visit Yedigöller in winter, and is the park road open?

You can, but it is not guaranteed. The steep, winding road up to the park from the Bolu side is closed to traffic whenever there is a risk of snow and ice, and access is then via Mengen. According to an Anadolu Agency report of 22 November 2024, the road was closed by decision of the Bolu Governorship following a snow warning from the Meteorological Service, and visitors were directed to the Mengen route. Last New Year was no different: according to an İHA news agency report of 31 December 2025, the Yedigöller road was temporarily closed after heavy snow followed by frost, and traffic was diverted via the Zonguldak–Mengen highway.

If you are planning Yedigöller (the "Seven Lakes") over New Year, accept two things from the outset:

    • The park road from the Bolu side may be closed; it was last New Year. You enter from the Mengen–Yazıcık side.
    • If the snow is very heavy, the Mengen side can become difficult too; do not set off that day without confirmation.

Nesilce Tatil Köyü sits on this winter route, in Hacıahmetler, Mengen, about 48 km from the park. If the road is open, a half-day trip leaving around 10:30 after breakfast and heading back at 15:30 is enough for the snowy lakeshores. Under snow, the park's paths are slippery and the lake edges partly frozen; never walk out onto the ice. For full details of the winter route, see our guide to getting to Yedigöller in winter via the Mengen road.

Is Kartalkaya open at New Year?

According to GoTürkiye, the official tourism portal of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the ski season at Kartalkaya starts in December and ends at the end of March; the ski area lies between 1,850 and 2,200 metres. New Year falls within that window, but the exact opening date changes every year depending on snow. Check the latest announcements from the ski resort and its hotels before you go.

Staying in Mengen and driving up to Kartalkaya for the day is possible, but it makes for a long day. It is about 50 minutes from Nesilce to Bolu city centre, and according to the Ministry, about 45 minutes by mountain road from the city centre to the ski resort; on snowy roads these times stretch. If skiing is the heart of your holiday, stay by the slopes; if it is a one-day add-on, staying in the valley makes more sense. For a detailed comparison, see where to stay for a Kartalkaya ski holiday.

Are Abant and Gölcük worth visiting in winter?

Both are visited in winter, and their snowy scenery is among Bolu's best-known winter images.

    • Abant Lake National Park: about 1 hour 10 minutes from Nesilce. It can be busy over New Year: according to a CNN Türk report of 1 January 2020, kilometres-long queues of cars formed at the Abant entrance that New Year, cars without winter tyres sliding on snow and ice caused congestion around the lake, and officials urged people not to set out without winter tyres. Going early in the morning saves the day.
    • Gölcük Nature Park: about 13 km from Bolu city centre and well suited to a short walk around the lake. On cold days the lake surface can freeze; do not step onto the ice.

The golden rule of winter applies here too: one big destination per day. Squeezing Abant and Kartalkaya, or Yedigöller and Abant, into a single day becomes exhausting once short daylight and snowy roads are added to the mix.

What to eat and do in Mengen at New Year

Mengen is the district most closely associated with Türkiye's culinary tradition, known as the country's "land of chefs". In winter, hearty grain-based dishes, pastries and butter-rich stews take centre stage. Every stay at Nesilce includes a Turkish village breakfast (köy kahvaltısı) made with local produce, and a late, leisurely breakfast on the morning of 1 January is one of the nicest moments of a New Year break. For more on the local food, see our guide to Mengen cuisine.

Things to do on a snowy day:

    • A short snow walk around the property and snow play for the children
    • A stop at a local restaurant in Mengen town (1 January is a public holiday, so check in advance which places are open)
    • Photographing the snowy forest in the first light of the morning
    • ATV rides, horse riding and nature walks: ask the property in advance whether these run in snow and ice

What to expect on New Year's Eve

No New Year's Eve gala, party or special menu has been announced at Nesilce Tatil Köyü. When you book, call to ask about dinner options for New Year's Eve, the property's plans for that night and the rules on bringing food and drink into your room. For anyone looking for a quiet New Year, this is where the real value lies anyway: snowy forest, a bungalow far from the crowds and a village breakfast the next morning. There is no pool and no jacuzzi at the property. Remember that you are in the middle of a forest: plan a quiet celebration rather than fireworks or sky lanterns.

Day 3 – Saturday 2 January: one big destination for the day

For families, the big plus of New Year here is that children can enjoy snow play away from the crowds in safe natural surroundings; heading back somewhere warm after 1–1.5 hours in the snow makes for happier children than long excursions. For couples, the real value is the quiet: a night in a bungalow looking out over snowy forest rather than a crowded gala. Groups of friends can use the lounge and terrace of a duplex bungalow as shared space; if you need more than one bungalow, booking early matters even more. Groups of more than 60 can request a quote via the group and corporate stays page or call the group sales line on +90 538 690 37 51. If you are bringing a pet, you need to let the property know in advance.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Mengen in Bolu a good choice for a New Year bungalow break near Istanbul?

Yes. Mengen in Bolu is about 3 hours (260 km) from Istanbul and about 2.5 hours (230 km) from Ankara. Because Friday 1 January 2027 is a public holiday, you can plan a three-night stay from 31 December to 3 January; journey times get longer in snow, so setting off early matters.

When should you book a bungalow in Bolu for New Year?

October and November are the easiest months. This year New Year falls on a long weekend, so demand spreads over two or three nights; families and groups who want one of the limited duplex bungalows in particular should book early. For current availability, call +90 507 922 11 18.

Are the roads to Bolu snowy at New Year, and do you need snow chains?

Snow and ice are likely but not guaranteed. According to Turkish State Meteorological Service data, the average minimum temperature in Bolu in January is -3.5 °C and roughly half the month brings rain or snow. Can you visit Yedigöller in winter, and is the park road open at New Year?

The park road from the Bolu side is closed to traffic when there is a risk of snow and ice; on 31 December 2025 it was temporarily closed because of ice and traffic was diverted via Mengen. Is Kartalkaya open at New Year?
