Bungalows in Bolu: Types, Heating and Permit Checks
What is rented as a bungalow in Bolu falls into four distinct types. We explain the differences in service, heating, kitchen and legal status, with the safety checks to make before booking.
Bungalows in Bolu fall into four types: resort bungalows, standalone rental houses, A-frame and glamping units, and public bungalows inside the national park. In winter the most important question is the type of heating. A bungalow rented as a residence needs a Ministry permit and a plaque at the door under Law No. 7464; businesses operate with a licence and a Ministry certificate.
What kinds of bungalows can you stay in around Bolu?
Places rented as "bungalows" in Bolu are really four different kinds of accommodation: bungalow units inside a resort, standalone bungalow houses rented on their own, A-frame and glamping units, and public bungalows inside a national park. They may look alike, but service, heating, kitchen set-up and legal status all differ. Knowing these four differences, not the photos, is what leads to the right choice.
This guide sorts bungalow stays in Bolu by how they are run and how they are equipped, and explains the safety and paperwork checks you can make before booking. For differences in building materials such as timber, prefab and container units, see our what is a bungalow and its types guide; for choosing between Abant, Mengen and the Yedigöller side, see our comparison of bungalow areas in Bolu.
The four bungalow types at a glance
| Type | Who runs it? | What is usually offered? | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resort bungalow (holiday village, nature resort) | An accommodation business | Reception, breakfast, parking, shared areas | Distance between units, breakfast times |
| Standalone rental bungalow | Owner or an agent | The whole house is yours; often a kitchen | Permit status, key handover, emergency contact |
| A-frame and glamping units | A resort or an owner | Design-led, compact space | Mezzanine stairs, sloping ceiling, warmth in winter |
| Public bungalows inside the national park | DKMP or its operator | A night inside the park | Few units; operating status can change |
A note on the last row: according to Kültür Portalı, Yedigöller National Park (the "Seven Lakes") has 18 bungalow units with 72 beds in total, plus restaurant service. Ask the Bolu branch of the National Parks directorate (0374 215 52 81) about current operation and availability.
Resort bungalow
These are separate units standing within an accommodation business. The advantage is that you get the privacy of a bungalow together with hotel-style service: a reception to turn to if something goes wrong, breakfast ready in the morning and a supervised site. For families with children and first-time bungalow guests, this is the option with the fewest surprises.
Standalone rental bungalow
Here a single house with a garden is rented to you in full. It appeals to large groups who want to cook for themselves, but breakfast, cleaning and emergency support are usually absent or depend on how reachable the owner is. The paperwork check described below matters even more for this type.
A-frame and glamping
Triangular A-frame houses and glamping units that mix tent and bungalow have been widely shared in recent years. The sloping roof that looks so striking in photos reduces usable space inside, and the bed is often on a mezzanine reached by stairs. If you are travelling with small children, older relatives or anyone with limited mobility, ask about the stairs and railings in advance.
Why does the type of heating matter so much?
Bolu's winters are harsh. According to MGM's long-term statistics for Bolu (1929-2025), the average minimum temperature is -3.5 °C in January, -1.1 °C in December and 2.1 °C in November. Even in October the average night-time low is 6.2 °C. So from October to April, the first question when choosing a bungalow should be "how is it heated?"
| Heating type | Pros | Cons | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central heating / combi boiler | Steady, even heat | A fault affects the whole unit | Does it run at night too? |
| Air conditioning (heat pump) | Heats quickly, you control it | Efficiency can drop on very cold nights | In every room or only the living area? |
| Electric radiator | Safe, no smell | Slow in large spaces | How many, and do they reach the mezzanine? |
| Stove / fireplace | Atmosphere and strong heat | Carbon monoxide and fire risk, managing firewood | Is the chimney maintained, is there a detector? |
Safety with stoves and fireplaces
A bungalow with a wood stove or fireplace is a lovely experience, but the risks of fuel-burning heating need to be taken seriously. The key points in the October 2025 Guide to Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning are:
- Never block the air vents in rooms with fuel-burning heaters, for any reason.
- In windy weather (especially the warm southerly lodos), the chimney can draw backwards; in these conditions the stove should either not be lit at all or be used with great care.
- The first symptom of carbon monoxide is often a headache; if one starts, open the windows and get into fresh air straight away.
- If you suspect poisoning, go outside even without symptoms and call 112.
- Never light a barbecue indoors; the guide also recommends using a CO detector.
Do not use a portable fuel-burning heater, barbecue or camping gas stove you have brought with you to heat the bungalow.
Kitchen and bathroom: what should you ask?
In bungalow listings, "with kitchen" can mean anything from a full kitchen to a kettle. In resort bungalows the unit may have no kitchen because breakfast and meals are provided by the resort; standalone houses usually have one, but the equipment varies.
| Topic | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen type | Decisive if you plan to cook | Is there a hob, fridge, pots and plates? |
| Barbecue | Forest fire rules change with the season | Where is the barbecue area, and when is it allowed? |
| Bathroom | In the unit or shared? | Is there a private bathroom, and how many? |
| Hot water | Decisive for back-to-back showers in a group | Electric water heater or central system? |
| Cleaning and towels | Important for longer stays | Is there mid-stay cleaning and a towel change? |
Barbecues matter especially in summer. According to the 2026 decision reported by Habertürk, entry to forested areas in Bolu was banned from 15 July to 30 September 2026; barbecues and picnics were allowed only at the picnic sites on the Governor's list, between 10:00 and 20:00. If you plan to barbecue at a bungalow near the forest, ask how the property handles that period.
At Nesilce Tatil Köyü every unit has a private bathroom and a Turkish village breakfast is included for all guests. Details of the room types are on our Bolu bungalow page.
How can you check the legal status before booking?
In Türkiye, places rented by the day or week fall under two separate legal frameworks. Knowing which one applies tells you who is responsible if something goes wrong.
1. Homes rented for tourism (Law No. 7464)
If a property registered as a residence in the land registry is rented for less than 100 days, Law No. 7464 on the Rental of Residences for Tourism Purposes applies. Under the law:
- A permit from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism must be obtained before the rental contract is made.
- A plaque specified by the Ministry is fixed at the entrance of the home.
- The Identity Reporting Law No. 1774 applies to permitted homes, meaning guests' identity details are reported.
- Under the text of the law, anyone renting without a permit faces an administrative fine of 100,000 TL per home; there are separate sanctions for the platforms that publish such listings.
If you are renting a standalone bungalow house, it is perfectly reasonable to ask the owner for the permit and the plaque.
2. Accommodation businesses
Hotels, holiday villages, guesthouses and nature resorts with bungalow units operate as businesses: they hold a workplace opening and operating licence from the municipality and may also hold a tourism operation certificate from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism or, for smaller properties, a simple accommodation certificate. According to the Ministry's 2025 accommodation statistics, Bolu has 39 properties with a tourism operation certificate and 102 with a simple accommodation certificate. This is also why being asked for ID at check-in is normal.
Checking for fake listings and photos
Just as important as paperwork is whether a listing really belongs to that business. To verify social media accounts asking for a deposit, run a reverse image search and tell official channels apart, see our Bolu bungalow photos and room choice guide.
An 8-point checklist for choosing a bungalow
- Type: resort unit, standalone house or A-frame?
- Paperwork: for a home, the permit and plaque; for a business, the operating licence or Ministry certificate.
- Heating: what type, whether it reaches every room, and whether it runs at night.
- If there is fuel-burning heating: chimney maintenance and a carbon monoxide detector.
- Kitchen and barbecue: what is there, and when and where barbecues are allowed.
- Bathroom and hot water: enough for your group?
- Stairs and mezzanine: safe for children and older guests?
- Emergencies: if something goes wrong at night, whom do you contact, and how?

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a standalone rental bungalow and a bungalow in a holiday village?
In a standalone bungalow house the whole house is yours and there is often a kitchen, but breakfast, cleaning and emergency support usually depend on how reachable the owner is. A resort bungalow gives you the privacy of a separate unit together with a reception, breakfast and a supervised site.
Does a bungalow rented by the day need a permit?
If a property registered as a residence is rented for less than 100 days, Law No. 7464 requires a permit from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism before renting, and the Ministry's plaque must be fixed at the entrance. Accommodation businesses operate instead with a workplace licence and a tourism operation or simple accommodation certificate.
Is it safe to stay in a bungalow with a wood stove or fireplace?
A well-maintained stove with a chimney that draws properly can be used safely; even so, never block the vents, take care in windy weather and get into fresh air at once if a headache starts. If you suspect poisoning, call 112. Asking whether there is a carbon monoxide detector when you book is a reasonable request.
Can you have a barbecue at a bungalow in Bolu?
It depends on the property and the season. In 2026, entry to forested areas in Bolu was banned from 15 July to 30 September; barbecues and picnics were allowed only at the picnic sites on the Governor's list, between 10:00 and 20:00. If you plan a barbecue at a bungalow near the forest, ask about the property's rules for that period.
Is it normal to be asked for ID when checking in to a bungalow?
Yes. Accommodation businesses must report their guests' identity details, and Law No. 7464 states explicitly that the Identity Reporting Law No. 1774 applies to homes with a tourism rental permit. Not being asked for ID is not an advantage but a sign that the rental may be unregistered.
Who is an A-frame bungalow suitable for?
It suits couples and small groups who put design and atmosphere first. The sloping roof reduces usable space and the bed is often on a mezzanine reached by stairs; if you are travelling with small children, older relatives or anyone with limited mobility, ask about the stairs and railings in advance.
