Bungalows in Bolu: Abant, Mengen or Yedigöller?

    23 May 2026· 8 min read·Nesilce Editor

Abant, Mengen and the Yedigöller side are in the same province but offer very different holidays. Choose the right area for a bungalow by distance, season and crowds.

    In brief

Choose Abant for a lakeside walk, easy motorway access and simple winter travel; the Yedigöller side for the seven lakes, autumn colours and a quieter park; and Mengen, on the winter route, if you want to plan Yedigöller in any season, winter included. In 2024 Abant received 1.49 million visitors and Yedigöller 289,000.

Which area of Bolu for a bungalow: Abant, Mengen or the Yedigöller side?

The short answer: if you want a lakeside walk, easy motorway access and a destination that is just as easy to reach in winter, choose Abant; if your priority is the seven forest lakes, the autumn colours and a quieter park, choose the Yedigöller side; if you want to plan Yedigöller in any season, including winter, with village quiet and local cuisine, choose Mengen. On the map these three areas look close together, but they lie in different directions: Abant is south-west of Bolu city centre, Yedigöller is to the north and Mengen to the north-east.

This article focuses only on choosing an area for a bungalow holiday. For every type of accommodation across Bolu, hotels included, see our guide to where to stay in Bolu.

Location, altitude, area and accommodation details come from the Kültür Portalı (the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's portal) pages on Yedigöller National Park and Abant Lake; the 2024 visitor figures come from annual data reported by the İHA news agency. The Abant-Yedigöller distance is an approximate figure calculated by adding the two sites' distances from Bolu city centre.

    Abant: who is it for?

According to the Kültür Portalı, Abant Lake lies 34 km south-west of Bolu, 1,328 metres above sea level; it covers 127 hectares and is 18 metres deep. You reach it on a 22 km road that branches off the Ankara-Istanbul D-100 highway and the TEM motorway at km 203. Around the lake there are five-star properties and bungalow-type accommodation units, and along the road from the junction to the lake there are places to stay and eat of various classes.

    Abant's strengths:

    • Easy access. A 22 km detour from the motorway brings you to the lake, making it the most convenient lake for anyone travelling on the Istanbul-Ankara corridor.
    • A destination in every season. It is busy in winter too: according to a TRT Haber report dated 6 February 2024, based on figures from the Provincial Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, Abant received 98,339 visitors during the mid-year school break.
    • The lake itself. Around the lake you can walk, cycle or take an electric vehicle tour, and there is a visitor and nature museum. For a detailed route, see our Abant Lake travel guide.

Things to bear in mind: Abant is by far the busiest natural site in Bolu; of the roughly 2.3 million visitors to Abant, Gölcük and Yedigöller in 2024, nearly two-thirds went to Abant. At weekends the car parks and the lakeside get crowded. It is also far from Yedigöller: about 75-80 km via Bolu in summer, and a much longer drive in winter when the Bolu–Yedigöller road is closed.

Who it suits: first-time visitors to Bolu, anyone who does not want a long drive for a short weekend, those looking for a snowy lake view in winter, and travellers whose itinerary does not include Yedigöller.

The Yedigöller side: can you stay next to the park?

Yedigöller was declared a national park in 1965. According to the Kültür Portalı, its 1,642 hectares contain Büyükgöl, Seringöl, Deringöl, Nazlıgöl, Küçükgöl, İncegöl and Sazlıgöl, and the plateau where the lakes lie averages about 780 metres in altitude. It is reached on a 42 km paved road heading north from Bolu; in winter, when this route is closed by snow, access is via Yeniçağa-Mengen-Yazıcık or Devrek-Yazıcık. The same source gives April to November as the best time to visit, and paid recreational fishing is possible at Büyükgöl and Deringöl from May to September.

Staying inside the park: the Kültür Portalı states that accommodation and a restaurant are offered in bungalows with 72 beds across 18 units inside the park, and that camping is possible in a 1-hectare tent area. We could not confirm the current operating status of these facilities from an official source; ask the Bolu Branch of National Parks (0374 215 52 81) before you go. We look at the camping option in detail in camping or a bungalow at Yedigöller.

Strengths of the Yedigöller side: being at the lakeside at first light, walking around seven different lakes in the forest in a single day, and a far quieter park than Abant. In 2024, Yedigöller received 289,209 visitors, less than a fifth of Abant's total.

Things to bear in mind: Yedigöller is a seasonal destination. As in an Anadolu Agency report dated 22 November 2024, the Bolu–Yedigöller road can be closed because of the risk of snow and ice, with access then provided via Mengen. The winter quiet shows in the numbers: during the 2024 mid-year school break, Abant received 98,339 visitors while 1,530 people went to Yedigöller. If you stay inside the park or right next to it, plan things like dinner and shopping in advance.

Who it suits: photographers chasing the autumn colours and the morning light, forest walkers, and anyone who accepts seasonal access conditions.

Mengen: a base for reaching Yedigöller all year round

Mengen is a district north-east of Bolu, known as Türkiye's "land of chefs" for its culinary tradition; we describe the local cuisine in our Mengen cuisine guide. For a bungalow holiday, Mengen's key feature is its location: the Yeniçağa-Mengen-Yazıcık route, Yedigöller's winter access, runs through the area. When the road on the Bolu side is closed, you reach Yedigöller via Mengen.

Nesilce Tatil Köyü is in Hacıahmetler, in the Mengen district, on this route. Distances from the property:

    DestinationDistance / time
    Yedigöller National Park48 km
Bolu city centre~55 km (~50 min)
    Abant Lake National Park~1 h 10 min
    Istanbul~3 h (260 km)
    Ankara~2.5 h (230 km)

Mengen's strengths: a base from which Yedigöller can be reached in every season, village and forest quiet instead of a crowded lakeshore, and activities such as ATV tours, hiking and horse riding. For travellers from Ankara, the route via the Istanbul road, Gerede and Mengen is also convenient.

Things to bear in mind: there is no lake on your doorstep; Yedigöller is a 48 km drive and Abant about 1 hour 10 minutes. If you want to be at the lakeside at first light, you will need an early start.

Who it suits: anyone who wants to see Yedigöller, especially after November, travellers from Ankara, families who want a large unit, and larger groups.

For month-by-month temperatures and rainfall, see our Mengen and Yedigöller weather guide.

    Which area is quieter?

The figures paint a clear picture. According to data reported by İHA, the three sites received a total of 2,303,762 visitors in 2024:

    • Abant Lake National Park: 1,490,302 (about 65% of the total)
    • Gölcük Nature Park: 524,251
    • Yedigöller National Park: 289,209 (about 13% of the total)

Across the year, then, the Yedigöller side is noticeably quieter than Abant, but that calm disappears during the autumn colour weeks, especially at weekends. We explain which days and times to go in Yedigöller on a weekday or at the weekend.

Watch out for a new arrangement too: according to a Bolu Gündem report dated 1 December 2025, the DKMP 9th Regional Directorate announced that entry to Gölcük, Yedigöller and Abant would be by appointment from 2026, with visitors applying a few days in advance. Check the current status of this system with the Bolu Branch of National Parks before you set off.

Combining Abant and Yedigöller on one trip

You can see both on one holiday, but squeezing them into the same day is tiring. On the summer route the distance between them is about 75-80 km via Bolu, and both are at their best in the morning. The practical rule is: choose where to stay according to the site you want to give a morning to.

    • If Yedigöller is the priority (especially in autumn), stay on the Mengen side and go to the park early in the morning. Abant lies west of Bolu, in the direction of Istanbul, so it can be added to your departure day.
    • If Abant is the priority (especially in winter), staying around Abant makes sense; remember that in winter you reach Yedigöller via Mengen anyway.
    • If you can spare two nights, plan two separate mornings. For an hour-by-hour plan, see our Bolu and Yedigöller bungalow weekend plan.

    Which area suits whom?

    • A short weekend from Istanbul, without Yedigöller on the itinerary: Abant.
    • Autumn colours and photography: the Yedigöller side or Mengen.
    • Yedigöller after November: Mengen, because the winter route runs through it.
    • Snowy views and easy access: Abant.
    • A trip starting from Ankara: Mengen (via Gerede).
    • A family or group of friends of 4-6: look for a large unit whatever the area; we describe Nesilce's duplex bungalows in our room choice guide.
    • Large groups and company events: Nesilce can host groups of more than 60 people at the same property with a combination of bungalows and hotel rooms; details are on the groups and events page.

Beyond these three areas, Bolu has other options for different styles of holiday: Gölcük, 13 km from the city, Mudurnu with its historic townscape, and Kartalkaya for skiing. We compare these areas too in our guide to where to stay in Bolu.

Where is Nesilce on this map?

Nesilce Tatil Köyü is at Beşler, Aşağı Mevkii Küme Evleri No:18, Hacıahmetler/Mengen/Bolu, about 48 km from Yedigöller National Park. The property has 10 standard bungalows, 8 duplex bungalows and 7 standard hotel rooms. A Turkish village breakfast is included for all guests; parking and Wi-Fi are free, and pets are welcome with prior notice. There is no pool or jacuzzi at the property. Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between Abant, Mengen and the Yedigöller side for a bungalow stay in Bolu?

Abant is the busiest area: close to the motorway, with an organised walk around one large lake and easy access in winter. The Yedigöller side offers seven forest lakes and a quieter park, but the Bolu road may close in winter. Mengen is a base on Yedigöller's winter route, with village and forest quiet.

How far is it from Abant to Yedigöller?

According to the Kültür Portalı, Abant is 34 km from Bolu and Yedigöller 42 km, so on the summer route via Bolu the drive between them is about 75-80 km. In winter, when the Bolu–Yedigöller road is closed and Yedigöller is reached via Mengen, the journey is much longer.

Which natural sites in Bolu are busy and which are quiet during the school winter break?

According to a report based on figures from the Provincial Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, during the 2024 mid-year school break Abant received 98,339 visitors, Gölcük 28,700 and Yedigöller only 1,530. In the winter holidays the crowds and the easy access are at Abant, while Yedigöller is very quiet because snow can close the Bolu road.

Why is Mengen considered Yedigöller's winter base?

The Bolu–Yedigöller road can close in winter because of snow and ice; the park is then reached via Yeniçağa-Mengen-Yazıcık or Devrek-Yazıcık. Staying on the Mengen side means you are not cut off behind a road that may close. Nesilce Tatil Köyü is on this route, about 48 km from the park.

Which natural site in Bolu is least crowded?

In 2024 Abant received 1,490,302 visitors, Gölcük 524,251 and Yedigöller 289,209. Across the year Yedigöller is noticeably quieter, but it gets busy too at weekends during the colour weeks between mid-October and 15 November.

Can you stay in Mengen and visit Abant as a day trip?

Yes. Abant Lake National Park is about 1 hour 10 minutes from Nesilce Tatil Köyü. As Abant lies west of Bolu, in the direction of Istanbul, adding it to your return day to Istanbul is a practical option.
