Where to Stay in Bolu: Area Guide by Trip Type (2026)

    23 May 2026· 9 min read·Nesilce Editor

Where you should stay in Bolu depends on the purpose of your trip. We compare Kartalkaya, Abant, Bolu city centre, the Mengen corridor, Mudurnu and Göynük by distance, accommodation type and who each suits.

    In brief

Kartalkaya is the best base for skiing, Abant for lakeside walks, Bolu city centre for a single night, Gölcük or a thermal stay, the Mengen corridor for Yedigöller and forest quiet, and Mudurnu or Göynük for historic towns. As 27 of the 39 ministry-licensed properties are in the central district, head for the centre if you want choice and the districts if you want quiet.

Where to stay in Bolu: the short answer

There is no single "best area" in Bolu that suits everyone; the right base depends on the main purpose of your trip. For skiing, stay at Kartalkaya; for lakeside walks, Abant; for a one-night stop, Gölcük or a thermal weekend, Bolu city centre; for Yedigöller National Park (the "Seven Lakes") and quiet forest, the Mengen corridor; for historic streets, Mudurnu or Göynük. This guide goes through the places to stay in Bolu area by area: distances, where each type of accommodation is concentrated and which kind of traveller each one suits.

One important warning: Bolu's sights look close together on the map, but mountain roads stretch journey times. Pick the wrong base and much of your holiday is spent in the car.

Where are most of Bolu's beds?

The 2025 annual accommodation statistics of Türkiye's Ministry of Culture and Tourism (as of 31 December 2025) show Bolu's ministry-licensed capacity as follows:

    Licence typePropertiesRoomsBeds
    Tourism operation licence392,0084,187
Tourism investment licence (still at investment stage)87841,876
    Simple accommodation licence1021,8323,882

Of the 39 properties with an operation licence, 27 are registered in the Merkez (central) district. Of these, 12 are guesthouses (pansiyon), 8 are hotels and 2 are thermal hotels; the rest are types such as a boutique hotel, a mountain lodge and a rural tourism property. The practical takeaway: if you want choice, head for the centre; if you want character and quiet, look at the districts. These figures only cover ministry-licensed properties. When you look at a listing, you can always ask which licence the property operates under.

Who is Bolu city centre the right base for?

Bolu city centre is the easiest option for travellers without a car, anyone staying a single night and people building their trip from several short stops. Restaurants, pharmacies and the bus station are all close at hand.

    • Gölcük: According to the Culture Portal, Gölcük Nature Park is about 13 km south of the city centre. There is no need to stay in a separate area for Gölcük. Details are in our Gölcük Nature Park travel guide.
    • Reaching Abant without a car: The Culture Portal's Abant page says privately run public buses leave Bolu city centre for Abant every two hours. Timetables can change, so check before you go.
    • Thermal stays: The ministry list includes two thermal hotels with an operation licence in the Merkez district. Karacasu, a few kilometres from the city, is Bolu's best-known thermal area.

The centre's weak point is Yedigöller. The park lies about 42 km north of Bolu, and the road from Bolu is closed by snow in winter (Culture Portal). In summer this is no problem; after November, a Yedigöller plan based in the centre becomes risky.

In Abant, should you stay by the lake or on the Abant road?

Lake Abant lies 34 km south-west of Bolu at an altitude of 1,328 metres; the lake covers 127 hectares and its shoreline is 7 km long. It is reached by a 22 km road that branches off the D-100 and the TEM motorway at kilometre 203. The Culture Portal notes that around the lake there are 5-star hotels, bungalow units, a camping and caravan area and restaurants, with further properties in various price classes along the road from the D-100 junction.

The choice is really about crowds. According to Bolu Olay's report of 22 August 2026, in 2024 Abant received more than 1.49 million visitors, Gölcük about 524,000 and Yedigöller about 289,000.

    • By the lake: You have the early-morning walk and the evening quiet to yourself before the day-trippers arrive. It is also the first area to fill up at weekends.
    • On the Abant road: There is more choice, but you need to be happy driving up to the lake and back every day.

For the lakeside trail and a seasonal plan, see our Lake Abant travel guide.

Should you stay at the slopes in Kartalkaya?

According to GoTürkiye, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's promotional portal, Kartalkaya is 38 km from Bolu; the ski area lies between 1,850 and 2,200 metres, and the season starts in December and ends at the end of March. The same source says the resort has five hotels with 1,600 beds in total.

If you will spend most of your days on the slopes, a hotel at the pistes saves time. If skiing takes one day and sightseeing two, staying in Bolu centre or down in the valley and driving up for the day is another option. We compare the two in detail in our Kartalkaya ski accommodation guide.

A safety note: in January 2025, according to the figure announced by Türkiye's Ministry of Justice, 78 people died in the fire at the Grand Kartal Hotel in Kartalkaya (bianet). Whatever the area, when choosing a winter hotel it should now be standard to ask about fire escapes, the alarm system and the emergency exit plan.

Who does the Mengen and Yedigöller corridor suit?

Winter access to Yedigöller National Park is from the Mengen side. According to the Culture Portal, when the Bolu road is closed by snow the park is reached via Yeniçağa-Mengen-Yazıcık or Devrek-Yazıcık. So anyone staying on the Mengen corridor is on the road used to reach Yedigöller in winter.

There is also limited accommodation inside the park: the Culture Portal mentions 18 bungalow units with 72 beds and a 1-hectare tent camping area. The 9th Regional Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP) also lists bungalows run by the General Directorate and tent camping. For current operation and availability, ask the National Parks Bolu Branch Office (0374 215 52 81).

    The Mengen corridor suits:

    • Travellers who want to see Yedigöller early in the morning, before the crowds
    • Families and groups of friends who want space
    • Anyone travelling with a pet
    • People looking for forest silence rather than city noise

You will find the differences between staying inside the park, at its edge and in Mengen in our guide to where to stay near Yedigöller, and a bungalow comparison of Abant, Mengen and Yedigöller in our Bolu bungalow regions guide.

Mudurnu and Göynük: mansions, bazaars and a slower pace

According to the Bolu Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, Mudurnu is 52 km from Bolu city centre and in March 2018 became Türkiye's 15th Cittaslow town. On the ministry list, Mudurnu has two five-star hotels and one rural tourism property with an operation licence. The district also has thermal springs. For Mudurnu's mansions, bazaar and hot springs, see our Mudurnu travel guide.

According to GoTürkiye, Göynük has been a Cittaslow member since 2017 and has preserved about 140 Ottoman-era houses from the turn of the 20th century. Because Göynük sits at the western edge of the province, it is not a base for Yedigöller or Kartalkaya. It is for travellers who want to spend two nights in a historic town.

When do Gerede, Yeniçağa and Seben make sense?

    • Gerede: A roadside stop in the direction of Ankara. The ministry list shows four hotels with an operation licence. If you are arriving late at night, you can break a long drive here.
    • Yeniçağa: One of the exits from the Ankara-Istanbul motorway towards Yedigöller (kilometre 152) is here, and the winter route to Mengen starts here. It is a transit point rather than a place to stay.
    • Seben: The ministry list shows one four-star hotel and one guesthouse. Worth considering for a village and small-town trip away from the crowds.

How does the season change the choice of area?

    • Winter: Demand peaks at Kartalkaya. Yedigöller goes quiet: according to DKMP figures reported by TRT Haber, during the 2024 mid-term school holiday Abant received 98,339 visitors, Gölcük 28,700 and Yedigöller only 1,530. If you are going to Yedigöller in winter, the Mengen corridor is the most sensible base.
    • Autumn: Demand shifts to the Yedigöller-Mengen corridor and to Abant. Weekends in October and November need booking early.
    • Summer: The lake and forest areas come to the fore. For month-by-month temperatures, see our Mengen and Yedigöller weather guide.

Five questions to ask before booking, whatever the area

    1. Winter access: Is the last stretch of road to the property cleared of snow?
    2. Breakfast: Is it included in the price, and what time does it start?
    3. Parking: Is it free, and is there enough space?
    4. Safety: Is there a fire alarm, an emergency exit and an evacuation plan?
    5. Cancellation: What are the cancellation terms if snow closes the road?

We cover booking channels and a pre-payment checklist in detail in our Bolu bungalow booking guide.

Where does Nesilce Tatil Köyü sit on this map?

Nesilce Tatil Köyü is on the Hacıahmetler side of Mengen: 48 km from Yedigöller National Park, about 55 km (50 minutes) from Bolu city centre and about 1 hour 10 minutes from Abant. It is about 3 hours (260 km) from Istanbul and about 2.5 hours (230 km) from Ankara.

There are 25 units: 10 standard bungalows (2-3 guests), 8 duplex bungalows (4-6 guests) and 7 standard hotel rooms (2 guests). A Turkish village breakfast is included with every stay; parking and Wi-Fi are free, and pets are welcome with prior notice. Check-in is at 14:00 and check-out at 12:00.

To be honest, Nesilce is not the right choice for every trip. If you are after ski-in access to the slopes, a thermal pool or evenings out in town, the other areas above will suit you better; there is no pool and no jacuzzi on site. If you are looking for Yedigöller, forest and a quiet bungalow, you are in the right corridor. Room types are on our Bolu bungalows page.
