Hiking and ATV Routes in Mengen, Bolu

    8 September 2026· 10 min read·Nesilce Editor

Yedigöller takes one day; the rest of your time is spent around the property. Mengen's forest routes are the most practical way to make the most of it.

    In brief

Hiking, ATV tours and horse riding can all be planned together around Mengen. In autumn, wet leaves make the ground slippery, so tread and pace matter more than distance. Activities depend on demand and the weather and need to be arranged in advance.

What about the hours outside Yedigöller?

Most guests who come to the area set aside one day for Yedigöller (the 'Seven Lakes' national park). But what about the rest of the time? The area around Mengen fills exactly that gap: forest walking routes, ATV tours and horse riding can all be planned in the same area.

This article compares the three activities by difficulty, duration and seasonal conditions.

Hiking: plan for the ground, not the distance

The forest tracks around Mengen run through a mix of beech, hornbeam and pine. In autumn this woodland is at its visual peak, but the ground changes:

    • A layer of wet leaves causes slips on sloping sections.
    • Morning dew soaks your shoes during the first two hours.
    • Roots and stones disappear from view under the leaves.

A practical rule: in autumn, the same route takes about 20-30 per cent longer than in summer. Plan your day accordingly.

    5-point pre-hike checklist

    1. Shoes with deep tread and non-slip soles
    2. Three layers of clothing (base layer, fleece, windproof jacket)
    3. Water and dry snacks
    4. A fully charged phone and a power bank
    5. A return time — at least an hour before dark

ATV tours: for those who want to see nature quickly

An ATV lets you cover distances in a short time that you couldn't reach on foot. In autumn the dirt tracks are damp, which makes riding more fun but also calls for more care.

Things to discuss before taking part:

    • Age and licence requirements
    • Helmet and protective equipment
    • Tour duration and route
    • Cancellation terms if the weather turns
    • What to wear — old clothes make sense, as mud is likely

Horse riding: the slowest and calmest option

Horse riding is the calmest activity in the area, and for most guests it's a first. It takes place in short sessions with an instructor. In windy or very wet weather, the programme may change.

How should you plan the day?

On a two-night stay, a balanced split looks like this:

    1. Day 1, afternoon: A short forest walk — to shake off the journey
    2. Day 2, full day: Yedigöller
    3. Day 3, morning: ATV or horse riding, then check-out

This plan gives you a far more enjoyable pace than squeezing three activities into one day. You'll find a detailed plan for your Yedigöller day in our autumn foliage calendar.

    Nesilce: the right expectations

ATV tours, nature walks and horse riding are available around the property. They depend on the weather, ground conditions and level of demand, and are not guaranteed every day or at every hour. Asking in advance with your dates is the most practical way to make sure your plan doesn't fall through.

There is no pool, jacuzzi or spa at the property; what stands out is the forest setting, the silence and the outdoor activities.

Our bungalow stays in Bolu page covers the room types, and the contact and location page has information on getting here.

The forest: what will you see?

The forests around Mengen belong to the humid forest belt of the Western Black Sea region. This directly shapes what you'll come across on your walks.

CanopyBeech, hornbeam, oakShifting from yellow to orange to red
UnderstoreyHazel, cornelian cherry, medlarFruit and colour
Forest floorFerns, moss, mushroomsDamp and scent

In autumn, a humid forest is not just something to look at but something to smell: the scent of wet earth, leaves and moss is a defining feature of this belt.

    Walking pace table

Pace and how often you stop determine how tired you get more than the length of the route does.

Group typeSuggested distanceHow often to stopTotal time
    Family with children2-3 kmEvery 20-25 minutes1.5-2 hours
    Couple4-6 kmEvery 40 minutes2-3 hours
Regular walking group8-10 kmEvery hour3-4 hours
Older guests1-2 km, flat groundEvery 15 minutes1 hour

In autumn, add 20-30 per cent to these times; your pace drops on wet ground.

    Safety and forest etiquette

Basic rules for activities in the forest:

    1. Don't leave the marked route. Looking for shortcuts is the most common reason people get lost in the forest.
    2. Share your route with someone. Tell them when you're setting off and when you expect to be back.
    3. No signal? Don't panic. You may have no phone reception on the valley floor; carry an offline map.
    4. Don't light fires. The risk of forest fire applies in every season.
    5. Bring your rubbish back. Anything that doesn't break down stays on the forest floor.
    6. Don't approach wild animals. Watching from a distance is the right approach.
    7. Don't play loud music. For the sake of both the wildlife and other walkers.

    After the activity: recovery

After a long hike or an ATV tour, the most neglected part is recovery:

    • Change your clothes. Hanging around in sweaty or muddy clothes is the quickest way to fall ill in autumn.
    • Drink water. In cool weather you feel less thirsty, but you keep losing fluids.
    • Rest your feet. Raising them for 15 minutes once your boots are off makes a real difference.
    • Have a hot meal. That's what really makes up the energy deficit.

The best times for a forest walk in autumn

After 17:00Darkness falls fastDon't stay in the forest

In the forest, darkness falls about half an hour earlier than in open country. Time your return accordingly.

How to fit hiking, ATV and horse riding into one weekend

On a two-night stay it's possible to try all three; the order matters.

    1. Day 1, afternoon: a short walk — to shake off the journey and get to know the surroundings
    2. Day 2, morning: ATV — the day is at its driest and brightest
    3. Day 2, afternoon: horse riding — a calm, unhurried finish
    4. Day 3: just rest and check-out

Putting an ATV tour and a long hike on the same day means waking up with aching muscles the next morning.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience to go hiking in Mengen?

No special experience is needed for the short forest routes nearby; anyone who walks regularly can complete them. On longer, steeper routes, pace and choice of footwear matter.

Do I need a driving licence for an ATV tour?

It depends on the tour and the operator. Confirm the participation requirements, age limit and safety equipment by phone when booking.

    Is hiking difficult in autumn?

Not difficult, but slippery. Wet leaves and dew reduce grip on sloping paths. Soles with deep tread and a slower pace are autumn's only real requirements.

Can children take part in these activities?

The short walking routes are suitable for children. Age and height limits apply to ATV tours and horse riding, so ask about the participation requirements in advance.

Are the activities available every day?

No. The weather, ground conditions and level of demand determine the programme. For definite information, call us and give your dates.
