Turkey Ski Season 2026-27: When Do the Resorts Open?

    · 10 min read·Nesilce Editor

As of 25 October 2026, no major ski resort in Türkiye has announced a firm opening date. We have put last season's actual dates, this year's announced targets and October's first snowfall into one table, plus how to reach Kartalkaya from Mengen.

    In brief

As of 25 October 2026, no major resort has announced a firm opening date for the 2026-2027 ski season. Last season the big resorts opened between 17 and 29 December 2025: Sarıkamış on the 17th, Erciyes and Palandöken on the 18th, Kartalkaya on the 19th and the Uludağ slopes on 29 December. This year Palandöken is targeting 4 December, and Uludağ and Kartalkaya are expected to open in December. Kartalkaya had its first snow, about 5 cm, on 16-17 October 2026. Winter tyres are compulsory for intercity commercial vehicles from 15 November to 15 April and recommended for private cars.

When does the 2026-2027 ski season open?

As of 25 October 2026, none of Türkiye's major ski resorts has announced a firm opening date for the 2026-2027 season. Last season the openings took place between 17 and 29 December 2025. The only concrete target announced so far this year is Palandöken's 4 December; Uludağ and Kartalkaya are expected to open in December. At every resort, two things decide the actual date: natural snowfall and nights cold enough for artificial snowmaking.

The ski season is the period when a resort's slopes and its lifts, such as cable cars and chairlifts, are open to skiers. In Türkiye it usually starts in mid-December and ends between late March and May.

    Opening calendar by resort

    Davraz (Isparta)14 January 2026—No information

Sources are given in the sections below the table and at the end of the article. We could not verify last season's opening date for Kartepe; the resort's large hotel was reported to have been sealed by the authorities in January 2026.

Why is there no date yet?

The weather, not the calendar, sets the opening date: the slopes need a snow base deep enough for safe skiing. Last season Palandöken opened with 55 cm of natural snow and Sarıkamış with 70 cm, while Erciyes started the season after producing around 250,000 tonnes of artificial snow with 154 snow guns. Snowmaking can bring an opening forward, but only when the nights are cold enough and humidity is low.

A news report of 21 October 2026 on the preparations at Palandöken sums up the situation clearly:

"...sezon açılışı için 4 Aralık hedeflenirken..." kesin tarihin hava koşullarına göre belirleneceği bildirildi.

(English: "...while 4 December is being targeted for the season opening...", it was reported that the exact date would be set according to weather conditions.)

    — Gazete Güncel / Pusula, 21 October 2026

In the same report, Palan Otel's general manager Nuh Seçer says that in recent years the season has been able to start around 10-15 December. So rather than locking in a ski plan for the first half of December, choose bookings that let you cancel or change dates.

Kartalkaya 2026-2027 season: what we know

Kartalkaya has not announced an opening date; the resort, which opened on 19 December last season, had its first snow this year on 16-17 October. Rising to about 2,200 metres in the Köroğlu Mountains south of Bolu, Kartalkaya is one of the closest major ski resorts to Istanbul and Ankara.

    • First snow: İHA (İhlas News Agency) reported heavy snowfall at Kartalkaya on 16 October 2026, and that by the following day the snow depth at Kartalkaya and Sarıalan had reached about 5 cm (İHA, 17 October 2026). This is an early sign for the season, but not a sufficient base for opening.
    • Last season's opening: the resort began its first season since the fire of January 2025 on 19 December 2025, with only two hotels. On opening day, general manager Yusuf Avcı told İHA:

"Pistlerimizin yaklaşık yüzde 80'i açık durumda ve bunu yapay karla da destekledik."

(English: "About 80 per cent of our slopes are open, and we have supported this with artificial snow.")

    — Yusuf Avcı (İHA, 19 December 2025)

    • Hotels: according to the same report, the two hotels that opened invested about 5 million dollars in fire safety, while one hotel could not open because the licensing process for its fire safety systems had not been completed. Which hotels will operate in 2026-2027 has not yet been announced.
    • Ski pass: no official price list has been published for 2026-2027. Figures seen online cite no source; get the current price from the facility where you will ski.

What changed for accommodation after the fire?

The Grand Kartal Hotel fire on 21 January 2025 claimed 78 lives and injured 137 people; it was followed by new deadlines and closure provisions tied to fire safety in existing accommodation. Two amendments published in the Resmî Gazete (Official Gazette) stand out:

    1. 1 July 2025: a provisional article added to the Regulation on the Fire Protection of Buildings required deficiencies in existing buildings that call for materials to be remedied by 31 December 2025, followed by inspection by the licensing authority (Resmî Gazete).
    2. 10 January 2026: a provisional article added to the regulation on business opening and operating licences provided that accommodation facilities unable to present a satisfactory fire brigade report at inspection would be barred from operating, and that their licences would be cancelled if they had not obtained a report by 31 May 2026 (Resmî Gazete).

What should you ask as a guest? When booking, you can ask whether the property has a current fire brigade compliance report and operating licence, which emergency exit route serves your room, and what fire detection system is in place. This is a reasonable question for any accommodation, whether a ski hotel or a small bungalow in the valley.

Winter tyres and snow chains for a ski trip

Winter tyres are compulsory from 15 November to 15 April for vehicles carrying passengers or goods between cities; they are recommended for private cars, but on a ski resort road treat them as essential. The Official Gazette amendment of 4 October 2025 extended the compulsory period from the former 1 December-1 April window to five months. According to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure's statement of 5 October 2025, provincial governorships can extend this period by one month before and one month after within their province. Law No. 7574, which came into force on 27 February 2026, sets a fine of 6,000 TL for operators of commercial vehicles that do not comply with the winter tyre requirement.

What this means in practice was seen in Bolu on 18 October 2026: after snow and icing on the Yedigöller road, the gendarmerie (Jandarma, the rural police force) only let vehicles with winter tyres through. For details, see our article on the Yedigöller road in November.

Short checklist for a ski drive: winter tyres, snow chains and gloves for fitting them, a full tank, a blanket, water and a charged phone; practise fitting the chains once before you set off.

    Getting to Kartalkaya from Mengen

From Nesilce Tatil Köyü in Mengen, Kartalkaya is about 90 km away via Bolu centre, which takes roughly 1.5-2 hours when there is no snow. Distance and time are approximate figures from a route-planning service; heavy snow, icing and weekend traffic will lengthen the journey.

Staying in the valley and driving up to ski for the day makes sense if skiing is one part of your holiday: non-skiers in the family can spend the day in Mengen with forest walks, a village breakfast and, in winter, options such as Yedigöller. If skiing is the priority and you want to be on the slopes every day, staying in the resort area means less driving. We compare the two options in detail in our article on where to stay for a Kartalkaya ski holiday.

    Sample day:

    • 07:30 breakfast, 08:00 departure
    • Around 10:00 on the slopes; use the first hours for equipment hire and the ski pass queue
    • 15:00 leave the slopes; drive down the mountain road in daylight
    • Around 17:00 back at the property; evening rest in the bungalow

Nesilce has two-storey bungalows for 4-6 people, standard bungalows for 2-3 people and hotel rooms for 2; a traditional Turkish village breakfast and parking are included, and there is no pool or jacuzzi. For winter dates see our Bolu bungalows page, and for New Year plans our article on a New Year bungalow holiday in Bolu.

What to bear in mind when planning your season

Stay flexible for early December and book early for January and February. The mid-year school holiday (yarıyıl tatili, Türkiye's winter half-term break) runs from 25 January to 5 February 2027 and has been the busiest period at ski resorts in past years.

    How we prepared this guide

We took the opening and closing dates from dated reports by Anadolu Agency (AA), İHA and DHA (Demirören News Agency), and the winter tyre and fire safety rules from the Official Gazette and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. We could not verify from an official source the actual day Kartalkaya closed its 2025-2026 season, the resort's total number of slopes or the 2026-2027 ski pass prices, so we have left them out. We found that some pages appearing online with a 2026 date and claiming "Kartalkaya will open on 1 December" actually date from earlier years. We will update the table as resorts announce their opening dates.

    Frequently asked questions

When does the 2026 ski season open in Türkiye?

As of 25 October 2026, none of the major resorts has announced a firm date. Last season the openings fell between 17 and 29 December 2025. This year Palandöken is targeting 4 December, and Uludağ and Kartalkaya are expected to open in December. Opening depends on snowfall and on nights cold enough for artificial snowmaking.

When will Kartalkaya open for the 2026-2027 season?

Kartalkaya has not yet announced a date. Last season it opened on 19 December 2025, with about 80 per cent of its slopes prepared with the help of artificial snow. In 2026 the first snow fell on the slopes on 16-17 October (about 5 cm). In the past the resort has usually opened in the second half of December.

Are the hotels at Kartalkaya open?

The 2025-2026 season opened with only two of the four hotels other than the Grand Kartal; one hotel could not open because its fire safety licensing process had not been completed (İHA, 19 December 2025). Which hotels will open for 2026-2027 has not yet been announced, so call the hotel directly before booking.

How much is a Kartalkaya ski pass for 2026-2027?

No official price list for Kartalkaya ski passes for 2026-2027 has been published. Figures circulating online cite no source, and some belong to facilities that were closed last season. Get the current price from the official channels of the hotel or facility where you will ski.

Are winter tyres compulsory when driving to a ski resort?

Under an amendment published in the Official Gazette on 4 October 2025, winter tyres are compulsory every year from 15 November to 15 April for vehicles carrying passengers or goods between cities; the Ministry of Transport recommends them for private cars. On snowy and icy mountain roads the gendarmerie can restrict access to vehicles with winter tyres, so fit winter tyres to your own car too on ski resort roads and carry snow chains.

How long does it take to get from Mengen to Kartalkaya?

From Nesilce Tatil Köyü in Mengen, Kartalkaya is about 90 km away via Bolu centre, which takes roughly 1.5-2 hours when there is no snow. The last stretch of the resort road is high and winding, so drive up in daylight and come back down before sunset.
