Bolu Bungalow Holiday with Pets: Rules and Preparation
A bungalow holiday in Bolu with your dog or cat is entirely possible; what really makes the difference is telling the property in advance and knowing the seasonal risks specific to Bolu.
Nesilce Tatil Köyü accepts pets with prior notice; share your pet's species, weight and habits when you book. Microchip registration is a legal requirement for cats and dogs in Türkiye, keep your pet on a lead at Yedigöller, and factor in the governor's summer forest-entry bans and the autumn hunting days.
Can you have a bungalow holiday in Bolu with your pet?
Yes. Nesilce Tatil Köyü in Mengen, Bolu, accepts pets provided you let the property know in advance; you can bring your dog or cat as long as you mention it when you book. Three things make the holiday go smoothly: describing your pet to the property beforehand, setting off with its microchip registration and vaccination record, and keeping it on a lead and under control in protected areas such as Yedigöller National Park (the "Seven Lakes").
This guide brings together the questions to ask before booking, choosing a room type, the drive from Istanbul and Ankara, visiting Yedigöller National Park with a pet, the seasonal risks specific to Bolu and a complete pet packing list.
| Topic | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Accepted at the property | Yes, with prior notice |
| Microchip registration | A legal requirement for cats and dogs |
| Yedigöller | On a lead and under control; ask the park administration about current practice |
| Leaving your pet in the car | Not recommended in any season, not even briefly |
| Two Bolu-specific notes | Summer forest-entry bans and hunting days |
What should you tell the property, and ask, before booking?
"Pets are accepted" is only the starting point; the details are discussed according to the animal, the dates and the room. Giving the following information in a single phone call or WhatsApp message speeds things up:
- Species and number: A dog or a cat, and how many?
- Breed, weight and age: A 4-kilo cat and a 35-kilo shepherd dog do not need the same planning.
- Habits: House training, any tendency to bark, whether it can stay alone in the room.
- Health: Up-to-date vaccinations, microchip registration and any special needs.
- Dates and number of guests: The room suggestion depends on these.
What you should ask:
- Which room type is considered suitable for your pet
- Whether an extra fee or deposit applies
- Where your pet may be during breakfast and in shared areas
- Whether it is acceptable to leave your pet alone in the room for a short time during the day
Even if you book through Airbnb or Hotels.com, you still need to tell the property about your pet separately. We explain what to look for when choosing a booking channel in our guide to booking a bungalow in Bolu.
Which room type works best with a pet?
Nesilce has three room types. The table below is designed to help you clarify your own needs; which room suits your pet is decided together with the property, depending on your dates and availability.
| Room type | Capacity | Advantage with a pet | Point to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard bungalow (10 units) | 2-3 guests | Single storey; a layout without stairs for older dogs or dogs with joint problems | More compact; think about where a large dog's bed will go |
| Duplex bungalow (8 units) | 4-6 guests | Living room and large terrace; room to move for a big family and a pet | Two floors means stairs; puppies and older animals need supervision |
| Standard hotel room (7 units) | 2 guests | Enough for couples with a small, calm pet | Neighbouring rooms are closer; a bungalow may suit dogs that tend to bark |
A practical rule: the more active and vocal your pet, the more self-contained the unit you should ask for. You will find room photos and details of the bungalow types on the bungalows in Bolu page.
Which documents and health preparations do you need before setting off?
Microchip and registration
Türkiye's Animal Protection Law No. 5199 requires cat and dog owners to have their animals registered using digital identification methods (a microchip); a transitional article of the law set 31 December 2025 as the deadline for this registration. In other words, every cat and dog on the road today is expected to be registered. Carry with you:
- A vaccination record or pet passport
- The microchip number (with a photo of it on your phone as well)
- A tag on the collar with your phone number
- A recent, clear photo of your pet (in case it gets lost)
Ticks, fleas and parasites
The area around Mengen and Yedigöller is forest and scrub. Before the trip, ask your vet about tick and flea protection; after every walk, check behind the ears, between the paw pads, the armpits and the groin. Do not handle a tick with bare fingers or put cologne or anything similar on it; if you are unsure, show it to a vet.
Planning for a vet
To avoid losing time in an emergency, find the nearest vet clinics (towards Mengen town centre and towards Bolu city centre, about 50 minutes away) in your map app before you leave, confirm their opening hours by phone and save the numbers. Not every district has a clinic open at night or at weekends. If your pet takes regular medication, bring enough to last a few days longer than your holiday.
How do you plan a car journey with a pet from Istanbul or Ankara?
Nesilce is about 3 hours' drive from Istanbul and about 2.5 hours from Ankara. For route details, see our Istanbul to Mengen driving guide and the Ankara to Yedigöller route. That is not a long time for an animal, but setting off unprepared can make it tiring.
- Secure your pet: A crate or a harness attached to the seat belt for a dog, and a carrier with the door closed for a cat. A pet travelling on a lap or in the front seat is a risk both to itself and to you.
- Plan your breaks: Plan a stop at roughly the halfway point. At a service area, clip on the lead before you open the door; the side of a motorway is a place where even the calmest dog can bolt.
- Feeding: Do not give a heavy meal just before you leave; if your pet suffers from travel sickness, talk to your vet beforehand. Keep the water bowl within reach.
- Do not leave your pet in the car: On a sunny day the inside of a car heats up much faster than the air outside. The animal welfare page of Bassetlaw District Council in the UK points out that when it is 22 °C outside, the inside of a car can reach 47 °C within an hour, and that a cracked window or shade does not remove this risk. In winter, on the other hand, a car with the engine off cools down quickly.
- Winter roads: Snow can mean waiting on the road over Bolu Mountain and the Gerede plateau. Keep extra water, food and a blanket for your pet in the car. In winter, always check the weather and road conditions before setting off.
Can you visit Yedigöller with a pet?
National park legislation contains no detailed provision devoted to pets; the National Parks Regulation states that visitors may use these areas "within the rules set by the administration". In other words, what counts is the park administration's practice at the time. The general rule is that a pet must be on a lead and under control. Before you go, call the National Parks Bolu Branch Directorate (0374 215 52 81) and ask about current practice; for the park's other rules, see our article on Yedigöller visitor rules.
The park's wildlife explains why the lead matters so much: according to the Yedigöller page on Kültür Portalı, the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism's portal, the park is home to bears, wild boar, wolves, foxes, martens, squirrels, deer, roe deer and hares, more than 100 bird species have been recorded, and there is a deer breeding station inside the park. An off-lead dog stresses these animals and can put itself in danger too.
Practical notes for the park:
- A short lead: Use a short lead rather than a long line, especially around the deer station and on lake shores where wild ducks gather.
- Fishing hooks and line: According to the same source, paid recreational angling is allowed at Büyükgöl and Deringöl from May to September. In those months, watch what your dog sniffs at on the shore.
- Keep food sealed: Picnic bags and dog food give off smells that attract animals such as bears and wild boar.
- Poo bags are a must: Do not leave your rubbish or your pet's waste in the park.
- Avoid the busiest hours: Autumn weekends are the park's busiest time. With a dog that dislikes crowds, choose a weekday or the early morning; details are in our article Yedigöller on a weekday or at the weekend?
The road from Nesilce to the park is 48 km; keep a towel in the car to wipe paws on the way back.
Which risks matter in Bolu, season by season?
| Period | Risk | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (July-September) | Hot cars, forest-entry bans | Never leave the car, even in shade; check that year's governor's decision |
| Hunting season (late August-early March) | Hunters and hunting dogs in the forest | On hunting days: a lead, a high-visibility vest, marked trails |
| Autumn (October-November) | Mud, rain, early nightfall | Two towels, a reflective collar or a light-up tag |
| Winter (December-February) | Snow, ice, waiting on the road | Water, food and a blanket in the car; wash paws after salted roads |
| Spring (April-May) | Ticks becoming active | Tick protection and a check after every walk |
Two of these points are specific to Bolu and are left out of most guides:
Summer forest bans. In summer 2026, the Bolu Governor's Office banned entry to forested areas from 15 July to 30 September because of the fire risk; picnics were allowed only in the forest and nature parks announced by the governor's office, between 10:00 and 20:00 and without open ground fires (Habertürk, 15 July 2026). If you are planning a long forest walk with your dog in summer, be sure to check that year's decision.
Hunting days. The 2026-2027 hunting season opened in the Western Black Sea region on 25 August, and hunting is allowed on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (TGRT Haber/AA, 7 June 2026). So the forest walks on your weekend break fall on hunting days. In forested areas outside the national park, keep your dog on a lead, put it in a brightly coloured vest and stay on marked trails.
Which etiquette matters at the property and in shared areas?
Nesilce has child-safe nature areas and open spaces shared with other guests. Not everyone is comfortable around animals; a few simple habits make the holiday easier for everyone:
- A lead in shared areas. Where children play, even the calmest dog should be on a lead.
- Quiet hours. Do not leave a dog that tends to bark alone in the room early in the morning or late at night.
- Protect the furniture. Bring your own blanket; ask about the property's preference on pets getting onto beds and sofas.
- Paws. Wipe paws before going inside after a muddy walk.
- Waste and hair. Pick up after your pet even in the garden; give the room a rough check for pet hair before you leave.
- Keep your distance during activities. During horse riding and ATV rides, keep your dog away from the horses and the engine noise. ATV noise frightens many dogs and cats.
- Respect village life. The area around Mengen is rural; where there are flocks and shepherd dogs, keep your dog on a lead and do not approach the flock.
What should you watch out for on a bungalow holiday with a cat?
Cats are more sensitive than dogs to a change of surroundings, and in a new place the first thing they look for is somewhere to hide.
- Keep the carrier closed all the way from the car to the room.
- Once inside, check the doors and windows first, then open the carrier.
- Bring the same litter tray and litter you use at home; new litter can cause problems in the first few days.
- Let your cat hide for the first few hours; a blanket from home helps it settle faster.
- Know where your cat is every time the bungalow door opens. Finding a cat that has escaped into the forest is very difficult.
What should go in your pet's bag?
Documents: Vaccination record or passport, microchip number, ID tag, a recent photo.
Food: Food divided into daily portions (with a day or two extra; do not switch food while travelling), a water bowl, a collapsible food bowl, treats.
Walks: A lead and a spare, a harness, poo bags, a reflective collar or light, two towels.
At the property: Its own bed or blanket, a favourite toy, a crate or carrier, a furniture cover; for a cat, a litter tray and litter.
Health: The tick and flea product your vet recommends, a tick remover, regular medication, a small first-aid kit, saved vet phone numbers.
Make sure your own bag includes a rain jacket and shoes with non-slip soles; keeping both hands free matters if you are to hold your pet safely on the trail.
A sample 2-night plan with a dog
Day 1: Set off in the afternoon, take a break on the lead halfway, check in after 14:00. In the evening, a short walk around the property; give your pet time to get to know its new surroundings by sniffing around.
Day 2: After the Turkish village breakfast, head to Yedigöller. Make the most of the morning in the park, take a long water-and-rest break in the shade at midday and be back at the property before dark.
Day 3: A relaxed morning walk, breakfast and check-out by 12:00. On the way home, another break halfway.

Frequently asked questions
Does Nesilce Tatil Köyü accept pets?
Yes. Pets are accepted provided you let the property know in advance. When booking, share your pet's species, breed, weight and age; you then agree together which room type is suitable, depending on your dates and availability.
Can I let my dog off the lead at Yedigöller?
No, a lead is essential. National park legislation contains no detailed provision specifically for pets; visitors use the area within the rules set by the park administration, and the general rule is that a dog must be on a lead and under control. Wild animals such as bears, wild boar, wolves and deer live in the park, and there is a deer breeding station; an off-lead dog both stresses these animals and puts itself in danger. Check the current practice with the National Parks Bolu Branch Directorate (0374 215 52 81).
Does my dog or cat have to be microchipped?
Yes. Türkiye's Animal Protection Law No. 5199 requires cat and dog owners to have their animals registered using digital identification methods, and set 31 December 2025 as the deadline. Carry the microchip number and vaccination record with you when you travel.
What should I watch out for on forest walks with my dog in Bolu?
In summer, check the governor's decision for the fire season: in 2026, entry to forested areas in Bolu was banned from 15 July to 30 September. During the hunting season (from 25 August in the Western Black Sea region in the 2026-2027 season), Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays are hunting days; keep your dog on a lead and in a high-visibility vest. Check for ticks after every walk.
Can I leave my dog in the car for a short while when we stop?
It is not recommended. When it is 22 °C outside, the inside of a car can reach 47 °C within an hour; a cracked window or shade does not remove this risk. Take your pet with you at stops, or have someone stay in the car with it.
Can I come on a bungalow holiday with my cat?
As pets are accepted with prior notice, mention your cat when you book as well. Cats are sensitive to a change of surroundings: keep the carrier closed until you are inside the room, check the doors and windows, and bring the litter tray from home. A cat that escapes in a new place can disappear into the forest.
