Cool Summer Holidays in Bolu: A Mengen Bungalow Guide

    9 June 2026· 8 min read·Nesilce Editor

In Bolu it is the nights, not the days, that make summer cool. A plan for a summer holiday in a Mengen bungalow: the hot hours in the forest shade, the evenings in the cool.

    In brief

According to MGM's Bolu station, the average high in July and August is 27.5-28.0 °C and the night-time low 12.5-12.7 °C, so you feel the coolness mostly at night. Choose July or August for a dry, sunny summer, or June for a lush but wetter forest. Staying in a bungalow in Mengen and giving the mornings to Yedigöller and the late afternoons to forest activities is the most practical way to escape the heat.

Is Bolu really cool in summer?

Yes, but you feel the coolness mostly at night. According to the official climate statistics for the Bolu station published by the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM, 1929-2025), the average high is 27.5 °C in July and 28.0 °C in August, while the average night-time low is 12.5 and 12.7 °C. The midday sun is still warm; the real difference begins after sunset.

One number is enough for comparison: in MGM's long-term data, the average August night in Istanbul is 20.8 °C. In other words, a summer night in Bolu is on average about 8 degrees cooler than in Istanbul. MGM does not publish separate long-term averages for Mengen, so the closest official reference is the station in central Bolu. The full month-by-month table and the Istanbul-Ankara comparison are in our Mengen and Yedigöller weather guide.

This guide turns that coolness into a summer holiday: which summer month to choose, how to shape a hot day, what to do in Mengen (known as Türkiye's "land of chefs") in summer, which rules to keep in mind and what to pack.

Which month for a summer holiday: June, July or August?

The three summer months are not alike. MGM's Bolu data shows the difference clearly:

MonthAvg. high / lowMonthly rainfallDays with rainSunshine per dayWhat it means for a summer holiday
June24.7 / 10.5 °C58.9 mm11.748.0 hoursThe forest at its greenest, but one of the wettest months of the year; a rain jacket is essential
July27.5 / 12.5 °C28.5 mm6.158.7 hoursThe sunniest month of the year; the most reliable time for outdoor plans
August28.0 / 12.7 °C24.3 mm5.118.5 hoursThe driest month of the year; the midday heat is at its strongest

Source: MGM, Bolu (centre) station, 1929-2025.

    In practice:

    • If you want a weekend without rain, choose July or August. There are on average 5-6 days with rain a month; this is when your plans are least likely to be spoilt.
    • If you want a lush, quiet forest, June is lovely; but with rain on 11-12 days a month on average, build a "rain hour" into every day.
    • For the week you travel, look at that day's forecast rather than averages: MGM's hourly and 5-day forecast for Mengen shows rain and wind a few days ahead.

How do you plan a hot summer day?

In August the gap between day and night in Bolu averages more than 15 degrees (28.0 and 12.7 °C). Planning your summer day around that gap turns the holiday into a real escape from the heat. The rule is simple: move in the morning and late afternoon, rest in the shade at midday.

    TimeTemperature logicWhat to do
07:30-08:30Coolest time of the dayTurkish village breakfast (köy kahvaltısı); ask about breakfast times the day before
08:30-12:00Mild air, soft lightWalk between the lakes at Yedigöller; the park is about 48 km from Nesilce
12:00-15:00Hottest part of the dayA cold picnic and a short break in the shade of the beech forest
15:00-17:00Still hotHead back to the resort and rest; spend the midday heat in the shade, not on the road
17:00-19:30Temperatures start to dropATV tour, horse riding or a short walk near the resort
After 20:00Night-time coolAn evening on the terrace and an early night; keep a cardigan handy

This rhythm lets you see Yedigöller before the busiest and hottest hours, and do your activities in the cool.

What is there to do in and around Mengen in summer?

Forest activities: hiking, ATV, horse riding

Nature walks, ATV tours and horse riding can all be arranged around Nesilce. The only summer rule is not to put an active outing in the midday heat: the morning or after 17:00 is most comfortable. For route lengths, difficulty and safety notes see our guide to hiking and ATV routes in Mengen. Activities depend on the weather and on demand, so ask in advance and give your dates.

    Highland pastures and ponds

According to the district profile published by the Mengen District Governorship, Mengen is a forested district with high summer pastures (yayla). The main ones are listed as Soğucak, Akçakoca, Bürnük, Sırıklı, Çukur Yayla, Çorakkadirler, Göl Yaylası, Aktepe, Ağalar, Küçükkuz, Civcivler, Mamatlar, Elemen and Afşar. The same source names the Ödek, Kemal Savaş, Şirinyazı and Hızarderesi ponds as the district's main picnic and recreation spots.

Some of the roads up to the pastures may be forest tracks; decide according to your car and the weather, and ask locally before setting off. The reward for heading up to a yayla in summer is a cooler afternoon than on the valley floor.

Yedigöller in summer: green forest, shade and fishing

Autumn is the busiest season in the area; summer offers green forest, shade and long daylight instead of colour. According to the park profile of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's 9th Regional Directorate, the lakes of Yedigöller National Park (the "Seven Lakes") run from north to south as Seringöl, Büyükgöl, Deringöl, Nazlıgöl, Kurugöl, İncegöl and Sazlıgöl. Türkiye's first farmed-trout hatchery was set up in this park in 1969, which is why the park is also known for recreational angling.

If you want to fish, there are two requirements:

    1. A valid amateur fishing licence issued by a provincial or district directorate of agriculture and forestry.
    2. The protected area's site-use permit fee: according to the 2026 fee tariff of the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP), this is 300 TL per rod, per person, per day.

Closed fishing seasons must be observed. Ask the National Parks Bolu Branch Directorate (0374 215 52 81) about the rules on the day. If you are thinking of staying in a tent in the park, see our guide to camping or a bungalow at Yedigöller for the rules, 2026 camping fees and night-time temperatures.

    Day trips

If you stay three nights, you can give one day to another lake. Abant Lake is about 1 hour 10 minutes from Nesilce. For a forest break with short walks close to central Bolu, our Gölcük Nature Park guide is a good place to start.

Can you have a barbecue or picnic in summer?

Summer is wildfire season in Bolu's forests, and the rules are set each year by the Governorship. According to Habertürk's report of 15 July 2026, the Bolu Governorship banned entry to forested areas in the province from 15 July to 30 September 2026. In summary:

    Topic2026 rules
Entering forested areasBanned from 15 July to 30 September
Controlled picnicsOnly in the listed forest and nature parks, 10:00-20:00
Listed site in MengenŞirinyazı Forest Park
AbantPicnic gas stoves only, during the hours above
Forested areas not on the listAny kind of fire banned, including barbecues, samovars and picnic gas stoves

When planning a summer holiday, keep in mind:

    1. The decision is published afresh every year. Check the dates and the list of permitted sites in the Governorship's announcement for the year you travel.
    2. Do not build your plans around a barbecue during the ban. A cold picnic basket is both safer and more practical in summer.
    3. Never drop a cigarette end, and take your rubbish back with you.

Is the Mengen Chefs' Festival held in summer?

The best-known event in Mengen's summer calendar is the International Mengen Cookery and Tourism Festival, held since 1981. However, it has not taken place for the last two summers:

    YearStatusSource
    2024The 37th festival opened on 24 AugustNTV / DHA, 24 August 2024
2025Not held by the municipality, citing austerity measures, road and infrastructure work and public sensitivity after the wildfiresKöroğlu Gazetesi, 1 August 2025
2026Dates of 7-9 August were announced in April; cancelled in June because of rising costsBolu Olay, 20 June 2026

The municipality says the cancellation "is not an end" and that the festival will return when conditions improve. If you want to plan your holiday around the festival, follow Mengen Municipality's announcements from the spring onwards. Even without the festival, the town's "land of chefs" identity lives on at the table: a Turkish village breakfast on a summer morning is the easiest way to taste it.

    What are summer evenings like?

Let us set expectations from the start: Nesilce is not an entertainment or pool resort; there is no pool and no jacuzzi. The value of a summer evening here is quiet and cool air.

    • Terrace time. The large terraces of the duplex bungalows are ideal for sitting out in the cool of the evening.
    • Wear one extra layer. Nights drop to 12-13 °C on average; if you plan to sit on the terrace, a cardigan or light fleece is a must.
    • The sky. In a village setting far from city lights, the sky is much darker on clear nights.
    • A midweek getaway. Free Wi-Fi is available in all rooms and common areas, so a few weeknights work well if you want to work by day and spend the evening in the cool.
    • An early night. If you want to reach Yedigöller in the cool of the next morning, do not let the evening run late.

What should you pack for summer?

Not camping gear, but a short list specifically for a summer bungalow holiday:

    • Cardigan or light fleece: summer nights average 12-13 °C.
    • Light rain jacket: especially in June.
    • Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses: July averages 8.7 hours of sunshine a day.
    • Light-coloured, thin long trousers: for ATV rides and horse riding, and against ticks in the forest. Tick protection is covered in detail in our camping guide.
    • Closed-toe shoes: for ATV rides, horse riding and the forest floor.
    • Water bottle and a small cool bag: for the midday picnic.
    • Insect repellent: for late afternoons by the lakes.
    • Amateur fishing licence: if you plan to cast a line.
    • Power bank: for photos and maps all day.
