Bayram in Bolu: 2026 Lessons and 2027 Eid Holiday Plan
Over Eid al-Adha 2026 more than a million vehicles went through the Mount Bolu Tunnel, while Yedigöller stayed the quietest park. Use these figures to plan the 2027 holidays.
Over Eid al-Adha 2026, more than half of the return traffic was squeezed into the last three days, and fewer than a tenth as many vehicles entered Yedigöller as entered Abant. In 2027 Eid al-Fitr falls on 9-11 March and Eid al-Adha on 16-19 May; book without waiting for the administrative leave decision and travel home a day before the crowds.
Is a bungalow holiday in Bolu a good idea over Bayram?
Yes. But over a Bayram (the Eid public holiday) the quality of your break depends less on the room or the view and more on the calendar. The figures from Eid al-Adha (Kurban Bayramı) 2026 showed this clearly: more than a million vehicles passed through the Mount Bolu Tunnel in 11 days, yet Yedigöller National Park (the "Seven Lakes") stayed the quietest of Bolu's nature areas. In 2027, Eid al-Fitr (Ramazan Bayramı) falls on 9-11 March and Eid al-Adha on 16-19 May.
This guide turns the lessons of the 2026 holiday into a practical plan for 2027: which day to set off, when to book and how to build a Bayram break away from the crowds. For route details see our Istanbul to Bolu Mengen driving guide, and for a comparison with ordinary weekends read Yedigöller on a weekday or at the weekend.
What happened in Bolu over Eid al-Adha 2026?
In 2026 the eve of the holiday (arefe) was Tuesday 26 May and the Bayram itself ran from 27 to 30 May. With the administrative leave announced by the government in early May, the break was extended to nine days for public-sector employees: from the end of the working day on Friday 22 May to Sunday evening, 31 May (NTV, 5 May 2026). In the private sector, the length of the break was left to employers.
We have three solid sets of data from this period:
| Indicator | 2026 figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Bolu Tunnel, 21-31 May | 1,051,507 vehicles in total | Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure data, Yeniçağ/AA |
| Ankara direction (outbound) | 229,992 of 587,526 vehicles (about 39%) on 22-24 May | Same source |
| Istanbul direction (return) | 260,960 of 463,981 vehicles (about 56%) on 29-31 May | Same source |
| Park vehicle entries during the Bayram days (27-30 May) | Abant 9,274 · Gölcük 6,068 · Yedigöller 877 | National parks (DKMP) branch office data, AA |
The tunnel figures come from Yeniçağ's report of 3 June 2026 and the park entries from AA's report of 2 June 2026.
Earlier years paint the same picture. This time the figures are visitors, not vehicles:
| Bayram | Abant | Gölcük | Yedigöller |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eid al-Adha 2024 (nine-day break) | 85,181 visitors | 27,317 visitors | 18,615 visitors |
| Eid al-Adha 2025 | 27,349 visitors | 13,109 visitors | 8,758 visitors |
Source: AA, 24 June 2024 and 11 June 2025.
Four lessons from 2026
- The return is squeezed into a tighter window than the outbound trip. About 39% of outbound traffic fell on the first three days, while more than half of the return traffic fell on the last three. If you can shift only one day over Bayram, shift your return day.
- Even with a longer break, everyone sets off at the same time. The nine-day holiday did not spread the crowds; the first and last weekends were still busy. The gain lies in the weekdays in between.
- Over Bayram, Bolu's crowds are at Abant and Gölcük. In 2026 fewer than a tenth as many vehicles entered Yedigöller as entered Abant. Across three years of data, Yedigöller was the quietest of the three areas at every Bayram.
- Late May is not summer. According to long-term data for Bolu from MGM, the Turkish State Meteorological Service, the average high in May is 21.4 °C and the average low 7.6 °C, with rain on 14 days of the month on average. A rain jacket, and a fleece for the evenings, belong in your Bayram bag.
When are the Bayram holidays in 2027?
According to dates based on the Diyanet (Presidency of Religious Affairs) calendar and the Ministry of National Education's 2026-2027 school calendar:
| Bayram | Eve (arefe) | Holiday days | Planning notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eid al-Fitr (Ramazan Bayramı) 2027 | Monday 8 March (half day) | 9-11 March, Tuesday-Thursday | Same week as the schools' second-term mid-term break (8-12 March) |
| Eid al-Adha (Kurban Bayramı) 2027 | Saturday 15 May (half day) | 16-19 May, Sunday-Wednesday | 19 May coincides with Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day; schools stay open until 25 June |
What these two calendars mean in practice:
- At Eid al-Fitr 2027 the school mid-term break and the Bayram fall in the same week. For families with school-age children this creates an effective nine-day window from 6 to 14 March, which may spread the crowds over several days. But March still counts as winter in Bolu: according to MGM, the average low is -0.4 °C, with rain or snow on 14.6 days of the month on average.
- At Eid al-Adha 2027 the eve falls on a Saturday and the last day of the Bayram on a Wednesday. Thursday 20 and Friday 21 May are working days. If administrative leave is granted for those two days, the break becomes nine days, from 15 to 23 May. As of October 2026 no such decision had been announced; in 2026 the decision also came only about three weeks before the holiday. So build your plan around both a 4.5-day and a nine-day scenario.
- Days are long in mid-May. At Yedigöller's coordinates, sunrise on 16 May 2027 is at about 05:33 and sunset at 20:05 (Sunrise-Sunset.org). There is plenty of time to enter the park early in the morning and keep the afternoon for resting.
When should you book for Bayram?
Bayram dates are known months in advance. What usually makes demand jump is the news of administrative leave. A practical order of steps:
- Choose your dates now; don't wait for the administrative leave decision. Book first for the basic 4.5-day scenario. If the break is extended, asking for an extra night later is easier than getting caught in the wave of demand that follows the announcement.
- Prioritise by room type. Nesilce has 25 units in total: 8 duplex bungalows (4-6 guests), 10 standard bungalows (2-3 guests) and 7 standard hotel rooms (2 guests). The duplex bungalows are the most popular and there are only a few of them, so asking early matters most for large families and groups of friends.
- Get the cancellation and change terms in writing. Bayram dates are fixed, but leave plans can change. We explain the differences between booking channels in our guide to Airbnb, Hotels.com and direct booking.
- Mention any extra requests at the start. Pets (prior notice required), an early breakfast, or activities such as ATV rides or horse riding. Activities depend on the weather and demand.
Which day should you travel in Bayram traffic?
If the 2026 pattern repeats, the table below will help for Eid al-Adha 2027. It is an estimate; before setting off, check your route with the e-Devlet closed roads query from the Turkish General Directorate of Highways.
| Scenario | Times to avoid | Better option |
|---|---|---|
| 4.5-day break (15-19 May) | Friday 14 May after work and midday on the eve | Friday 14 May before noon, or very early on the morning of 15 May |
| 4.5-day break, return | Afternoons of 18-19 May | Tuesday morning, 18 May, or Thursday morning, 20 May, if you can take the day off |
| Nine-day break (15-23 May) | The first weekend (15-16 May) | Set off on 17-18 May, after the first wave has passed |
| Nine-day break, return | 22-23 May | Return on 20-21 May |
One extra practical note for those coming from Istanbul: check-in is at 14:00, so if you leave at around 10:00-11:00, on a traffic-free day the roughly 3-hour drive (260 km) gets you there close to check-in time. From Ankara the drive takes about 2.5 hours (230 km); see our Ankara to Mengen and Yedigöller route for the options. Check-out is at 12:00; on the way home from a Bayram break, setting off straight after breakfast keeps you ahead of the evening wave.
A three-night Bayram plan away from the crowds
The plan below was built for a May Bayram such as Eid al-Adha 2027. The idea is simple: go where the crowds go, but at the hour when they are not there.
| Day | Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Check in at 14:00; a short walk around the resort and some rest | Shake off the drive and don't try to squeeze in a park on the first day |
| Day 2 | After breakfast, Yedigöller (48 km); be inside the park before 10:00; back at the resort in the afternoon | Bolu's quietest nature area over Bayram, and quieter still early in the morning |
| Day 3 | Around Mengen: ponds, highland pastures, or ATV rides and horse riding | Places that Bayram traffic never reaches; options in our things to do in Mengen guide |
| Day 4 | Check out at 12:00; on the way home, plan Abant only for early morning, or not at all | Abant is Bolu's busiest area over Bayram |
If you are a family or a group of friends of more than four, the living room and large terrace of a duplex bungalow give everyone space to unwind together after a busy Bayram day. A Turkish village breakfast, free parking and Wi-Fi are included with every stay. There is no pool and no jacuzzi at the resort; the value of a Bayram here lies in the forest, the quiet and long mornings.
Eid al-Fitr in March: plan by winter rules
If you will spend Eid al-Fitr 2027 in Bolu, don't copy the May plan. According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Kültür Portalı, the Bolu-Yedigöller road is closed by snow in winter; during this period the park is reached via Yeniçağa-Mengen-Yazıcık or Devrek-Yazıcık. The same source gives April to November as the best period to visit.
- Check the road every morning. National Parks Bolu Branch Office: 0374 215 52 81.
- Winter tyres and snow chains may still be needed in early March; for a driving checklist see our guide to reaching Yedigöller in winter.
- The days are short. On 10 March 2027 sunset at Yedigöller is at about 18:54, but darkness falls earlier in the wooded valley.
- Adjust your expectations. In March the forest has not yet come into leaf and tracks may be muddy. If there is snow the scenery is beautiful; if not, plan a quiet, restful Bayram.

Frequently asked questions
How many days will the Eid al-Adha 2027 holiday last?
The eve (arefe) is Saturday 15 May 2027 (half day) and the Bayram runs from Sunday 16 to Wednesday 19 May. The official holiday is 4.5 days. If administrative leave is granted for 20-21 May, the break becomes nine days, from 15 to 23 May; as of October 2026 no such decision had been announced.
How busy was Yedigöller over Eid al-Adha 2026?
According to DKMP data reported by AA, 877 vehicles entered Yedigöller between 27 and 30 May. Over the same days 9,274 vehicles entered Abant and 6,068 entered Gölcük, so Yedigöller was Bolu's quietest nature area over Bayram.
Will the road from Bolu to Yedigöller be open over Eid al-Fitr 2027?
Not guaranteed. The Bayram falls on 9-11 March, and according to Kültür Portalı the Bolu-Yedigöller road is closed by snow in winter; during this period the Yeniçağa-Mengen-Yazıcık route is used. Call the National Parks Bolu Branch Office (0374 215 52 81) before setting off.
Is it a good idea to travel on the eve of Bayram?
In 2026 about 39% of outbound traffic passed during the first three days of the holiday. Midday on the eve and the evening of the last working day before the holiday are the busiest times; if possible, leave the day before, before noon, or very early on the morning of the eve.
How many nights should you stay in Bolu over Bayram?
Three nights is a balanced stay: one day to settle in, one day at Yedigöller early in the morning, and one day around Mengen. Over a nine-day break, putting those three nights on weekdays makes both the roads and the parks easier.
Which room type books up first over Bayram?
Of Nesilce's 25 units, 8 are duplex bungalows (4-6 guests), and this is the most popular type. If you are a large family or a group of friends, it is best to call as soon as the Bayram dates are known.
