Turkey November School Break 2026: A 9-Day Bolu Plan
Schools close after the last lesson on Friday 13 November and reopen on Monday 23 November. How to spend those nine days in Bolu, which days are busy and which are quiet, and what to check before you set off, all in one guide.
According to the calendar announced by Türkiye's Ministry of National Education (MEB) on 13 June 2026, the first-term mid-term break of the 2026–2027 school year starts on Monday 16 November and ends on Friday 20 November; with the weekends either side, pupils are out of school for 9 days, from 14 to 22 November. The quietest window in Bolu is the weekdays of 16–19 November; the weekends of 14–15 and 21–22 November are the busiest days at Yedigöller and Abant. In mid-November Bolu's average high is 13.3 °C and average low 2.1 °C (MGM), and snow is possible on the mountain road.
When is Turkey's November 2026 school break?
The November 2026 school break runs from Monday 16 November to Friday 20 November. The ara tatil, or mid-term school break, is a five-working-day rest that Türkiye's Ministry of National Education (Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı, MEB) places in the middle of each term. Pupils have their last lessons on Friday 13 November and return to school on Monday 23 November; with the two weekends in between, that makes a total of 9 school-free days, from 14 to 22 November.
MEB's announcement of 13 June 2026 gives the dates as follows:
"...birinci dönem ara tatili 16 Kasım 2026 Pazartesi günü başlayacak ve 20 Kasım 2026 Cuma günü sona erecek."
("...the first-term mid-term break will begin on Monday 16 November 2026 and end on Friday 20 November 2026.")
School holiday dates for the 2026–2027 year
| Period | Dates | Time out of school |
|---|---|---|
| First-term mid-term break | 16–20 November 2026 | 14–22 November, 9 days |
| Mid-year (semester) holiday | 25 January–5 February 2027 | 23 January–7 February, 16 days |
| Second-term mid-term break | 8–12 March 2027 | 6–14 March, 9 days |
| End of the school year | 25 June 2027 | — |
The calendar covers schools under MEB, which includes Turkish state schools. Universities follow their own academic calendars, so if a family member is at university, check separately whether they are free on the same days. We could not find any published statement for 2026 on whether teachers will be required to attend professional development during this week; if one parent is a teacher, confirm your plans against the school management's announcement.
Why Bolu for the school break?
Bolu is the nearest forest region to both Istanbul and Ankara, 2.5–3 hours away by car, and the one place where you can see the last of the autumn colours and the first winter snow in the same week. The November break coincides with the end of the colour season at Yedigöller (the "Seven Lakes" national park): the peak there is usually between mid-October and 15 November. By the week of 16–20 November some trees will have lost their leaves; in return, mist, bare forest and still lakes offer a different kind of scene for photographers.
Demand figures bear this out. At the end of 2025, Gültekin Aksan, Regional Director (9th Region) of Türkiye's General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP), told the state news agency Anadolu Ajansı (AA):
"Ziyaretçilerden 126 bini yılın 9 ayında, 180 bin ise son iki ayda geldi."
("Of the visitors, 126,000 came in nine months of the year, and 180,000 in the last two months.")
— Gültekin Aksan, DKMP 9th Regional Director (AA, 29 November 2025)
In other words, roughly 59 per cent of Yedigöller's approximately 306,000 visitors in 2025 came in October and November alone. The school-break week is the final link in that busy chain. Firuz Bağlıkaya, President of TÜRSAB (the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies), also said that bookings rose by 25 per cent during the November 2024 break, that families were choosing nature routes close to the big cities, and that Abant was among the stand-out destinations (Takvim, 9 November 2024).
How busy is each day of the break week?
The quietest days are 16–19 November, Monday to Thursday; the busiest are the two weekends either side of the break. Last year's evidence is clear: when the November 2025 break joined up with a weekend, Anadolu Ajansı reported from Yedigöller:
"Çadır ve karavan kamp alanlarının tamamen dolduğu milli parkta, girişlerde uzun araç kuyrukları oluşuyor."
("In the national park, where the tent and caravan campsites are completely full, long queues of vehicles are forming at the entrances.")
The table below is an estimate based on that pattern and our own observations on autumn weekends:
| Day | Date | Expected crowds | Suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturday | 14 November | Very high | Make it your travel day; skip the parks |
| Sunday | 15 November | High | Parks before 10:00, or stay around the resort |
| Monday | 16 November | Moderate | Best day for Yedigöller |
| Tuesday | 17 November | Low to moderate | Gölcük and Abant |
| Wednesday | 18 November | Low to moderate | Safranbolu or Mudurnu |
| Thursday | 19 November | Moderate | Rest, walks and horse riding at the resort |
| Friday | 20 November | Moderate to high | Leave before midday if heading home |
| Saturday–Sunday | 21–22 November | High | Return traffic; Sunday afternoon is heavy |
Days are short in November: on 15 November the sun sets in Bolu at about 17:36. So that you are not driving the forest road in the dark, plan to leave the parks at least an hour before sunset.
What is the weather like in Bolu in mid-November?
In mid-November, expect 10–13 °C by day and 0–3 °C at night in Bolu; rain is frequent and snow is possible on higher ground. Measurements from the Bolu (city centre) station of MGM, the Turkish State Meteorological Service, for 1929–2025 are as follows:
| November data (MGM, Bolu) | Value |
|---|---|
| Average temperature | 7.0 °C |
| Average high | 13.3 °C |
| Average low | 2.1 °C |
| Average days with precipitation | 11.8 days |
| Total monthly precipitation | 46.2 mm |
| Daily sunshine | 3.3 hours |
| Lowest temperature recorded in November | -24.8 °C |
These figures are for the city centre. The lakes at Yedigöller sit at about 780 metres, but the road from the Bolu side climbs to about 1,700 metres (our own route and elevation calculation). That is why, in 2026, the season's first snow fell on the higher stretches of the Yedigöller road as early as mid-October, on 16 October (İHA, 16 October 2026).
Clothing for children: three layers (thermal base layer, fleece, waterproof coat), a hat and gloves, spare socks and non-slip boots. For a detailed list, see our Yedigöller autumn packing list.
How should you spend the 9 days in Bolu?
You do not need to spend all nine days in Bolu; the most efficient plan is to avoid the first weekend's crowds and spread a four-night stay from 15 to 19 November across the quietest weekdays. Below is a programme designed for families with children, based at Nesilce Tatil Köyü in Mengen.
Suggested plan: 15–19 November, 4 nights
Day 1, Sunday 15 November: Travel and settle in
- Arrive in the afternoon (check-in 14:00). About 3 hours from Istanbul and about 2.5 hours from Ankara.
- Relax in the bungalow in the evening; arrange an early breakfast for the next morning in advance.
Day 2, Monday 16 November: Yedigöller
- Leave at 08:30; Yedigöller is 48 km away. Get into the park before 10:00.
- A short walk around Büyükgöl and Deringöl; 2–3 hours is enough with children.
- Head back at 15:00. Check the road and the winter-tyre requirement in the morning; details in our guide to the Yedigöller road in November.
Day 3, Tuesday 17 November: Gölcük and Abant
- The lake walk of about 1.3 km at Gölcük Nature Park is an ideal length for children.
- Abant in the afternoon; the walk around the lake is about 7 km, and you can do just part of it.
- The drive from Abant back to Nesilce takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. Details: Gölcük guide, Abant guide.
Day 4, Wednesday 18 November: Safranbolu or a day at the resort
- Safranbolu is about 95 km away, 1.5 hours by car. The bazaar, the Ottoman mansions and the City History Museum; Turkish citizens can enter Ministry museums with a MüzeKart (museum pass).
- If you would rather have a quieter day, there are nature walks, ATV rides and horse riding at the resort. Routes: Mengen nature walks and ATV guide.
Day 5, Thursday 19 November: Head home
- Check out after breakfast (12:00). Leaving on Thursday keeps you out of the 21–22 November weekend traffic.
Alternative: if you can only come at a weekend
If you are coming on 14–15 November or 21–22 November, visit Yedigöller early on Sunday morning rather than on Saturday, and spend the afternoon around the resort. On these two weekends the car parks and the narrow forest road become bottlenecks; for more on weekend crowds, see our article on weekdays versus weekends.
What should you check before you set off?
Check three things: road conditions, park entry and your car's winter readiness. Mid-November is the week when Bolu's roads switch from autumn to winter conditions.
- Road conditions. On 18 October 2026, the gendarmerie (jandarma, the rural police) closed the Bolu–Yedigöller road because of 15 cm of snow and ice; when it reopened about 3 hours later, only vehicles with winter tyres were allowed through (DHA, 18 October 2026). In previous years, the road was also closed by snow on 22 November 2024 (AA).
- Park entry. Under DKMP's 2026 fee tariff, entry to Yedigöller, Abant and Gölcük is 75 TL per person or 225 TL per car; children under 7 enter free and students with ID get 50 per cent off. DKMP's 9th Regional Directorate had also announced appointment-based entry for 2026; we could not confirm the system's current status from an official source. Bolu Branch Directorate of National Parks: 0374 215 52 81.
- Your car. Winter tyres, snow chains, a full tank, and a blanket and water in the car. For a driving checklist, see our guide to reaching Yedigöller in winter.
Where should you stay in Bolu for the school break?
For families with children, the most practical option is a bungalow with more than one room and breakfast included; Mengen is close to both Yedigöller and the Safranbolu direction, which makes it a good base for weekday day trips.
Nesilce Tatil Köyü is a 25-unit resort set in the forest in Mengen:
- Two-storey bungalow for 4–6 people (8 units): two floors with a living room; suits families with two children.
- Standard bungalow for 2–3 people (10 units) and hotel room for 2 people (7 units).
- Included: Turkish village breakfast, free parking, Wi-Fi. Pets are welcome with advance notice.
- Good to know: there is no swimming pool or jacuzzi; this is a nature resort.
- Check-in 14:00, check-out 12:00. Rated 4.3 on Google (595 reviews, October 2026).
The break week and its two weekends are the most requested dates in November. Weekday nights (16–19 November) are more flexible. For room choices, see our bungalows in Bolu page; for family-focused details, see our guide to family bungalow holidays in Bolu.
How we prepared this guide
We took the dates from MEB's official announcement, the weather data from MGM's Bolu station statistics, and the crowd and road information from reports by the Turkish news agencies Anadolu Ajansı, İHA and DHA. The day-by-day crowd table is not a measurement; it is an estimate based on news reports from previous years and our autumn observations at the resort. As of 25 October 2026, we could find no official information on the appointment-based entry system, teachers' status during the break, or whether any events are planned in the region between 14 and 22 November; if new announcements appear, we will update this article.

Frequently asked questions
When is the November 2026 school break in Turkey?
Under MEB's 2026–2027 school calendar, the first-term mid-term break (ara tatil) starts on Monday 16 November 2026 and ends on Friday 20 November 2026. The last day of lessons is Friday 13 November, and lessons resume on Monday 23 November.
How many days is the November school break?
The official break is five working days (16–20 November). Together with the weekends before and after, pupils are out of school for a total of 9 days, from 14 to 22 November. The phrase "9-day break" you will see in Turkish media comes from adding those weekends.
Do universities have a November break too?
The MEB calendar only covers schools under the Ministry of National Education. Universities follow their own academic calendars, so students need to check their own university's calendar to see whether there is a break.
Which days are quieter in Bolu during the break?
16–19 November, Monday to Thursday. The weekends of 14–15 November and 21–22 November combine the holiday effect with the weekend effect, so they are the busiest days at Yedigöller and Abant. During the November 2025 break, the campsites at Yedigöller were completely full on the days that fell at the weekend (AA, 9 November 2025).
What is the weather like in Bolu in mid-November?
According to data from MGM's Bolu station (1929–2025), the average high in November is 13.3 °C and the average low 2.1 °C, with an average of 11.8 days of rain or snow in the month. Overnight ice and snow on higher ground are possible; in 2026 the first snow fell on the higher stretches of the Yedigöller road on 16 October.
Can you visit Yedigöller during the break?
Yes, but mid-November is when the autumn colours are over and the risk of snow begins. The Bolu–Yedigöller road was closed for about 3 hours because of snow on 18 October 2026, and when it reopened only vehicles with winter tyres were allowed through. Before setting off, call the Bolu Branch Directorate of National Parks (0374 215 52 81).
